Many thanks for the hat tip – will definitily be ordering a copy
kavita1Participantwow, Per, just wow!
kavita1ParticipantVery nice indeed Per – thank you ๐ – I need to sort out some scout units for my 6mm
kavita1Participantyou have done a fantastic job – look forward to seeing the cavalry units ๐
kavita1ParticipantFantastic information – thank you for gathering and sharing it ๐
kavita1Participantthanks for all the insights ๐
kavita1ParticipantSuperb Mike – especially those command bases. Keep em coming ๐
kavita1ParticipantI love Battlefront WW2 – the fire and fury set. Personally – I think they are pretty much unbeatable if it is realism rather than abstraction you are looking for at a scale that is a bit larger than skirmish. One troop stand equal one squad.
For skirmsh I think people are well served with the offerings from the Lardies and Battlegroup. Its got the right balance of the mechanics of combat without loosing ‘playability’.
Funnily enough I use the 10mm scale setting but with 6mm figures – it suits me.
The rules are a pain to get hold of in the UK. Caliver Books do them though. Despite that I still think they really stand out.
More about them here (great info in the forums on the site as well – if a bit quiet):
kavita1ParticipantOh eee – I love the early war – Barbarossa – stuff especially – even the slightly off the wall material that never really saw action (because it was completely impractical like military planning based on some retro-scifi event…). After all you have to have a couple of T35s and KV2s for ‘what if’ scenarios…. I have carefully built up both German and Russian forces so that I can play early as much as mid or late war scenarios. In effect its three completely seperate fronts/settings in many given the transformations that occured on both sides.
I’ve ordered a BKC ruleset to test it out – I’ve been using Battlefront WW2 (the fire and fury set) which has the same flexible approach to basing and is easy to use with similar numbers of vehicles. To be honest I have been completely happy with BFWW2 – but the other 6mm guy I just got to know locally also mentioned BKC as his go to set.
Look forward to seeing the new work – hopefully I’ll build up the confidence to put up a few of mine – just so people can compare begineers to the pros. like ๐
kavita1ParticipantWow – look forward to seeing more – I do 6mm eastern front ww2 as well and your posts have been really inspiring to see. My own stuff cannot compare – but it gives me something to aim towards ๐
kavita1ParticipantMS you are a bad man ๐
kavita1ParticipantAye – same with some of the Russian WW2 tanks with 2-man turrets and lack of radios
kavita1ParticipantI’d like to think I’m not snobby about different wargame syles/approches… but I have to be honest and admit I looked down a wee bit on fantasy gaming. Dwarves and Hobbits it just not right is it… ๐
I guess it takes a while to admit I’m simply enjoying playing with toy soldiers. For years I played Avalon Hill etc boardgames and I think the dominant discussions on these definately reinforced a few illusions.
I’m interested in the history, like the researching, like the modelling – the vehicles, the units, the buildings – like the collecting, like the idea of being able to play scenarios that try to be as representative of historical realities as possible (the last one being a pretty impossible ‘hope over reality’ straw for me to clutch onto…). And this wee hobby gives me the opportunity to combine all these. When looking at WW2 rule sets – which was my starting interest – I was a bit sniffy about points-based rules. Its not my thing or interest or desired approach – but the truth it is just another way of combining and enjoyng a set of interests.
So my initial preconceptions have fallen by the wayside. I’m warming to the idea of VBCW at the moment – I love the imagination and honest humour – so small steps for an old fart ๐
I completely agree with Phil D’s point about a more significent division being that between “scenario-based gaming vs point-list based gaming”. *shakes fist at the clouds*
kavita1ParticipantAlternatively – forget it – TMP is well past its sell buy date. A shame.
kavita1ParticipantThanks for the review. That was very helpful. I had been looking at this for a while – definately going to go for it now ๐
kavita1ParticipantI’ve come back to wargames with miniatures after decades. Started out many moons ago with 20mm WW2 as a teen – then moved onto the likes of Panzer Blitz and Squad Leader boardgames. Then everyday life took over.
I’ve come full circle – and gone somewhat overboard in the process. I did everything people warned against – instead of starting with some small units and working from there I’ve spent the last few months building up and painting half the soviet and german army in miniature… oops. The initial interest is with 6mm eastern front WW2 (early/mid) – armies, scenery and buildings. Almost ready to use with a couple of sets of rules I like the look and level of (Battlefront WW2 – mainly – unfortunately no one else uses these or seems to know about them so its gonna mainly be solo play. oops. There is also Battlegroup Kursk/Barbarosa – at another level – seems to be a lively forum and interest). The aim is to work through a few of the fine skirmish campaign scenarios properly (as opposed to piddling around as I have done so far) – re-vamped to fit the level of the ruleset.
Other interests – SCW and VBCW have really caught my eye – especially VBCW – but that going to have to wait until a bit of gaming is out of the way. There’s also the question of scale – much as I like 6mm (and it fits with the tabletop paraphenalia I have…) I’m not sure potential opponants would be interested… Maybe that doesn’t matter though…
