Thanks Mike, really nice work.  I wish I had half of your patience and creativity.  I’ve never come across foliage sheets before, might have to give this a try some time.

Shapeways was always very expenive for what was on offer, they had some lovely EU star wars ships that I spent many hours coveting but the price was way to high for the product even before the advent of home 3D printing so while its sad to see them go, in truth I’m only really surprised it took this long.

Never mind the jackets! What on earth kind of shade is that mud on the trousers meant to be?  I only weather my napoleonics* with autoclaved soil taken from the appropriate battlefield using period appropriate field equipmentand painstakingly added to an acrylic medium to ensure I can decorate with absolute authenticity.

Sadly Mike, I think you experience is very typical and I have to agree that our fellow gamers, while individually tend to be fine, as a collective lack social awareness, courtesy and hygiene.  The hygiene doesn’t worry me too much, I do martial arts so the locker room smell is pretty familiar to me and I can quite easily tune it out.  The lack of courtesy and awareness is quite another thing.

I used to go to three shows, Carronade, Claymore and the dreaded Salute but they were almost exclusively disappointing experiences.  The same traders selling the same stuff every year and a growing trend towards box sets I can buy anywhere and tables of badly painted 2nd hand crap (mostly GW) with the same scenery bits appearing year after year from the same people.  The games were fine but tended to fall into three categories, the traditional wall of backs where the show was being used as a venue for a club game wih the public clearly not welcome, the museum piece display “games” where lots of lovely figures are set up in an unlikely but dramatic position nerve to be touched and guarded by someone you’d want to avoid being stuick next to in a broken lift to the ones you’d probably quite like to have a go at but can’t get even close to.

The attendees vary from the pushers and shovers, mostly equipped wiht oversized backpacks (allt he better for smacking you in the face with) who will quite cheerfully push in front of you at the trade stands to the truly unusual gents (and lets face it, they’re mostly gents) with the traiditonal SS patches and other dubious t-shirts “all worn for the purposes of educating us on history don’t you know!”  As a rule visiting a show for me is a reminder of why I choose not to discuss my hobbies at work for fear of being judged.

In truth shows have cost me much more than I have ever gained.  My wife, a long time wargamer finally hung up her dice after a particularly bad experience at Salute one year.  In additon to all the above she felt so intimidated and harrassed by the socially inepts, dubious apparel, con creeps and other lowlifes that when I returned to her after a solo wander around one last the ganes and appeared next to her without sufficient warning she physically recoiled and was ready to strike before she realised it was me.

You will never convince me that shows are a necessary or useful part of our hobby and while I may attend some of the smaller locla shows again in the future.  I very  much doubt I will find them a positive experience and I will never again set foot in the Salutes of this world or the like.

Beat me too it.  I fully agree with Arthur and would suggest that one or  of our members here could stand to consider their words more carefully and leave some of their views untyped.

Also, while I’m offering my opinion, I would suggest that taking action (however hamfisted) to reduce the likelihood of kids buying knives and swords online is a good thing and if a few wargamers are inconvenienced that’s a fairly small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

How far can an ork/orc/goblin march in a day then? C’mon, where’s your evidence?

    One hex, two if mounted!

Sadly the evidence loses something if not read in the original orcish!

We used to use them although not in every battle.  I vaguely remember using Foundry Darkest Africa bearers for an Old Slann (mostly lizardmen) and amazon force a long long time ago.  They added a bit more tactics with the need to defend as well as attack.

Just remember that respirators of any sort are only effective if they fit properly and this can be difficult if you have facial hair (or stubble) which can affect the seal between the face and the rubber of the mask.  It’s also important to check the and replace the filter regularly as they can become saturated without warning, if you start to smell solvent / resin it’s past time to replace the filter.

I’d tend to recommend sticking to nitrile gloves where possible as latex are a known skin sensitiser and can cause sever allergic reactions with prolonged exposure (you may need to check the breakthrough times for different glove types though to be sure you pick the right ones for the substances being used.)  Double-gloving may be advisable and if possible use two different colours of glove to make it a little easier to spot tears and holes.  Also remember that disposable gloves are splash-proof on a good day and for the most part should be removed and replaced when they become contaminated, if you’re fishing round in reservoirs, tongs are probably a better bet.

I’d also strongly recommend taking a look at the Safety Data Sheet for your resins and solvents, they can be awkward to read until you’re used to them but do provide a lot of excellent safety information and legally they should be supplied along with any chemical purchased.  In particular keep and eye out for substances listed as skin and respiratory sensitisers which can over time lead to exposed individuals becoming hypersensitive and starting to react to any exposure to the material.  Where this is the case it’s best to take additional precautions to avoid developing the sensitivity in the first place.

I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with Mike.  Like a lot of gamers of a certain age I have a soft spot for Rogue Trader when the setting was still being developed and had a real sense of humour about it.

I always fancied putting together a bus gang from Logan’s World but never quite got around to it…maybe one day!

I played that scenario many times, 40K was (in my opinion of course) much better as a small, skirmish game with a sense of humour and gloriously weird scenarios.   I still can’t look at a game of 40K at a club or convention without secretly wishing someone would randomly bung an Ambull onto the table or have the infamous Abdul Goldberg make a guest appearance.

The Battle at the Farm instilled in me a love of playing the underdog as we desperately tried to beat those rock hard marines with those plucky (but useless) orks…probably explained why I ended up with an (often defeated) Imperial Guard force in Rogue Trader!

Another one that’s harder to get hold of from me I’m afraid, the Heresy Miniatures Dragon.  I believe Andy may still cast a few of these to order in what he calls “imperfect”.  However, his idea of imperfect is in my experience entirely acceptable.

Fantastic figure, with a sense of scale and movement and despite the size it was dead easy to build albeit somewhat intimidating to paint…and yes that is a 28mm figure for scale.

Have you considered Descent from  FFG?  I haven’t played the latest edition but had a lot of fun with the previous version.  I suspect like most FFG games it may suffer form a high price point and interminable expansions but you may be able to pick up the previous edition cheaper?

My daughter and I had a lot of fun playing Zombie Kidz Evolution and Zombie Teenz Evolution when she was younger.  They’re very much board games but have a nice legacy mechanic which introduces new rules slowly.

You could take a look at the recently re-released Heroquest which looks nice (albeit a bit pricey for me).  Trying to find Advanced Heroquest 2nd hand at a reasonable price might be a challenge though.

If you want to go full wargame I’d recommend Rangers of Shadow Deep, I played that with a seven year old and she was fine although it does involve losing characters which we handwaved with KO rather than death as she tended to get quite attached to her various henchmen.

Lud in the Mist looks interesting, hoping its something not contaminated by Tolkien.

Nope, it was published in 1926, so 11 years before The Hobbit.  It’s very much in the mould of twee English Fantasy mixed with a satire of social norms of the time and the protagonist has shades of the reluctant participant which always put me in mind of Bilbo.

I’d recommend Lud in the Mist by Hope Mirrlees as an alternative to the traditional fantasy.  A small scale, reserved fantasy which has a lot more in common with traditional fairy tales and Tolkien’s Shire than swords and sorcery.
