http://twitter.com/HobbsTheGamer or hear me witter on about stuff on the Meeples and Miniatures podcastMichael HobbsParticipantMy latest obsession are the “Battlemats” from Cigar Box Battles. At present they come in two sizes: 3′ square or 4′ x 6′, and about 15 styles, from sci-fi space scenes to frozen tundra to 19th century farmlands, etc, etc. More are in the works. I love the idea of playing on a pretty, full-color “map” like that, and the prices are very reasonable.
as soon as saw your email about Blucher I did think about the Cigar Box mats, I just love the idea of just taking a game map and some cards to a club and being able to play a game

ditto on the Metal magic Asterix minis (well the ones I’m missing anyway)

Now, if I could only find the time to read the rules or paint some minis for them, I’d buy them right away. Failing that, they go on the Christmas List.
now come on Thomas, when does lack of time stop us from starting a whole new period or game 😉
all the best

http://twitter.com/HobbsTheGamer or hear me witter on about stuff on the Meeples and Miniatures podcastMichael HobbsParticipantI’ve done some solo testing of Star Wars using Pulp Alley. The first full game is this Thursday. The rules provide for an excellent SW skirmish, infinitely better than the old West End games rules and the WoTC rules. Nothing needs to be changed in the rules. All the changes that I have made are league construction changes. The upcoming supplement ‘Vice Alley’ has some necessary rules for Gangs (5 figures acting as one) that seem crucial to Stormtoopers, but these can be found on the various Pulp Alley forums if you can’t wait. The author of the game suggested perhaps adding an extra Ability to each sci-fi character. This really helps profile the iconic Star Wars heroes and villains. Other sci-fi genres, like Star Trek or perhaps 40K, would not need these bonus abilities. I even add this bonus ability to the gangs. It works a charm. Pulp Alley works great with 1 to 3 heroic members of a league, but suffers some with 4 to 6 figures necessary to mimic teams of heroes like the rebels of A New Hope. The standard league is a 4th level leader, a single 3rd level sidekick and various 1st and 2nd level underlings. A variant of a 4th level hero and two 3rd level sidekicks is also common in play. I created a special league type allowing for a lot of 2.5th level ‘almost sidekicks’ called peers to recreate some of the sci-fi teams like the iconic bounty hunters and rebel heroes. I’ll publish it on the pulpalley.com site when I think it properly tested, but it should be easy enough for anyone to do something similar. Some of my working leagues… https://www.flickr.com/photos/48207505@N05/sets/72157645853192578 Robert
that all sounds really interesting Robert, I’ll wander over to the playtest site and see if I can get a look at the new rules

http://twitter.com/HobbsTheGamer or hear me witter on about stuff on the Meeples and Miniatures podcastMichael HobbsParticipantI’m kind of in the same position as Mick A, I also invested in the KS and am dismayed with the lack of interest westwind are giving the game, that being said I did get a whole pile of really interesting figures to paint up from the KS so I’m happy with that.
however the basic game is excellent and really captures the feel of Gothic Horror games, and the campaign system is second to none. it is still one of my favourite games and one I enjoy playing, when I get the chance. I do think the game needs a bit of love from Westwind as they’ve released some fantastic sculpts but haven’t been able to support those figures with rules that people can allow them to be used properly, which is one of the downsides to rules that have specific character types and specific rules for those characters I guess
I have started looking at Pulp Alley though as I think the character generation section in that will allow me to use the figures I have from the Kickstarter in new and interesting ways, if you are interested in Gothic horror that might be another avenue to try out

http://twitter.com/HobbsTheGamer or hear me witter on about stuff on the Meeples and Miniatures podcastMichael HobbsParticipantI’ve been thinking about using Pulp Alley for a Blakes 7 style of game, not for any reason other then I like the figures Crooked Dice do and have been after an excuse to get them for a while.
however after a good read of the rules I can see PA working for this kind of game wonderfully

http://twitter.com/HobbsTheGamer or hear me witter on about stuff on the Meeples and Miniatures podcastMichael HobbsParticipantHi Thomas
I think it’ll work very well for BoFA and with minimal amount of work
S&S gives you a great foundation for pre-gunpowder battles with a really innovative command and control mechanism which is open enough to allow for different types of units to be created.
Each unit in the game is an element so basing is not a worry as long as both sides use the same frontage, each unit has a type, some stats and possibly some characteristics and this is where you can start to make changes to the core rules.
By adding new characteristics you can create new types of units, for example you could model Wargs as (for example) light cavalry and give them a new characteristic called ‘Fierce’ that affects enemy units morale or something like that, there are already a whole bunch of characteristics in the rules that could be used all you have to do is work out where the gaps are and write some new ones
Characters could use the rules for Commanders (that is part of the rules already) so that’s a simple fit as well
The only problem is magic, but luckily Tolkien made magic use fairly passive, so maybe you use characteristics to model this and give certain Characters a magic characteristic which allows them to do some actions during the game, you could even use cards that players can use when a character or a unit a character is attached to is activated
In short I think using S&S for fantasy battles is very do-able the only work you would have to do is look at the characteristics in the book and write some new ones for specific units
Oh and then try and balance them all so none are too powerful, that’s the tricky bit 😉
All the best
Mike
