    French Revolution

The first pic’s of my Vendée units are now on my blog.  The figures are from Lancashire Games Archive range.  I think these have a lot going for them as well as being excellent value.  For infantry command I’ve used Lancashire’s Southern Tories and it seems to work well enough.

Happily, there seems no shortage of flags online for the army.  The Sacred Heart seems to have been the most popular followed by the Lilies of France.

There is also info’ on how the Army of the Vendée was organised and its tactics. If it’s of interest here is the link.

I’ve made a good start on painting the French infantry and a first battery.  There are also some thoughts on the importance of the first fire and the revolutionary tactical response.  If you would like to read it and see more pic’s of the toys  here is the link.

Hi Tony, I enjoy the preparation for projects too, not all of mine come to fruition either.

The French Revolutionary Wars figures in Lancashire Games archive are good.  Bigger 15mm if you like.  I don’t like the cavalry much but the infantry are grand and inexpensive too.

Yes, I have enough of the Irregular ’98 Irish for a Rebels and Patriots game.  What I really want is the long awaited Khurasan ones.  Here’s hoping.

I’ll check out Arnolds’s Marengo Marengo thanks for the tip.

    Italian Wars

There are some more units for this project on my blog and a new flag for the French.  It’s one of two I made showing Saint Martin, a soldier saint.  He was popular with the French soldiers and they liked to carry his image.

The rest of the post is about missilery.  If it is of interest here is the link.

    Italian Wars

A bit of a milestone today I’ve finished my first unit of French Ordnance.  I’ve gone for a three in one of Gendarmes, Archers and light cavalry.  I intend to do three or four of these.  You can see more of them on my blog.

There is also a few words about just what an Archer was and what they might do in combat. There are cards for Gonzalo too and an extract on cavalry fighting.

If it is of interest here’s the link.

    Italian Wars

I have posted my latest completed units for my Great Italian Wars project on my blog.  Most of the figures are from Venexia with a few from Legio Heroica and Alternative Armies in the mix.  I don’t think you can see the join.

There’s also an extract from my Gonzalo rules.  Should that be of interest here’s a link.

Kronoskaf 7YW site for the French or have a look at Not by appointment blog.  The Irish piquets were a composite of troops from the various Irish Regiments.  Maybe a try a Colonel’s colour as their flag.  You can find a flag for Fitz James Horse at Kronoskaf too.  Lovely flags and free.

Spanish try Kronoskaf WSS I cannot remember which regiment the troops came from. Worth checking the 7YW site too, sometimes the same flags were carried in the earlier period too.

    Hope that helps.

The latest installment of my Great Italian wars project is now up on my blog.  There are more Stradiots, a unit of mounted arquebusiers and some more on my Gonzalo rules for the period.

    Italian Wars

There is also a pic of the fellows shown above who are a Scots unit in French service. They could also have been armed with bows or indeed lances.

I intend that they should second a unit of gendarmes yet to be painted.  Ideally, I’d like that to be the one led by Berault Stuart a prominent Franco-Scots nobleman.  I’m going to have a go at making his flag.

    Great Italian Wars

I have been busy on my Italian Wars pike men. There are an awful lot of them and I’m nowhere near finished.

There are some pic’s on my blog and more on my Gonzalo rules for the Great Italian Wars, specifically about pike fighting.

    Italian Wars

I’ve made a good start on the light cavalry for my Italian Wars project.  A couple of units each of Stradiots and Genitors.  The figures are Mirliton and Venexia 15mm.

There are some pic’s on my blog and some thoughts about how different sorts of light cavalry fought.  If it’s of interest here is the link.

My ACW project is done, at least for the moment. The Confederate infantry are now up on my blog. Ten regiments in all.

The figures are mainly QRF with some Peter Pig and a few more Minifigs. If you would like to see more pics here is a link.

I dare say when a range is out of production and someone really wants the figures a few quid might be made.

Otherwise sellers are lucky to break even.  Willz makes a good point above.

I can’t see investment buying of wargames figures showing a good return.

    Interesting find there Guy.

Mac Colla’s lads were apparently equipped in the Highland fashion.  The Irish Lancers were not traditional Irish Horse rather the lance had been introduced by Owen Roe to combat Scots pistol armed Horse-it worked.  I’m not sure about the other notes.

    A handy map.
