Played a lot of WRG 6th in my teens (because I was unaware of much else) and concluded it was a dry, soulless set of rules – that 33 factor morale test you can keep! Moved on to Shock of Impact which were a lot better

I gasped at that. Were there two sets of rules called Shock of Impact? Because the set I’ve got open in front of me*** has a 42 factor morale test. It also has a ‘disobedience’ test with another 10 factors, and an ‘obedience’ test with a further 9. Then there’s the cavalry 30 yard reaction test against infantry with 22 factors. When you finally get to the fighting, it’s got 19 shooting and 30 bloody melee variations. The battlefield role definitions are a wonder – Shock, Shock(M), Shock(I), Shock(C) anyone? No? OK chuck in Basic and Missile as well then. I’ll pass swiftly by the three pages of possible manoeuvres and special formations because I’m beginning to get. One. Of. My. Headaches… Oh and don’t forget the two double-sided A4 quick reference sheets – WRG had one double-sided A5. Essentially, what Messrs Beck and Bussey did was take WRG and bolt a load of unnecessary tat onto it. It was the wargaming equivalent of a Barry boys’ motor (Google it) We played SoI back in the 80s. Once. I think a couple of units might actually have got into contact, but we were all longing for death by then so I could be mistaken. ***I’m working from home. Ha!

quite true, I still have a copy in the loft (shudders)

Thanks for mentioning Spartans and Successors. it tends to get lost, with everything else out there. It has several other things in its favour: it only costs £5, it includes 12 historical scenarios and postage is free with Amazon Prime.

I am writing an article for Slingshot currently addressing wargaming on a budget which looks at figure scale and numbers used, terrain and rulesets. S&S certainly fits in that category but doesnt mean that it isnt as good as some of the ‘bigger’ glossier sets

Spartans and Successors is a pretty straight forward. I certainly may revisit this. I am leaning towards my own home grown rules at the moment but you never know

still looking as most people will be for ever more. A couple of things spring to mind for me:

    – do you want a fun set and not worry about the historicity too much

    – a nice balance of fun and historically correct

    – more emphasis on getting the historical aspects right in favour of the fun element

For me its somewhere in the middle but slightly more towards historical than not. I must admit I mostly solo game so my fun is in the process rather than the interaction with an opponent.

    Things I look for:

    – some element of luck but not too much (dice shouldnt overpower the game for instance)

    – grids (simplifies movement, avoids arguments or ambiguities, and makes movement more realistic and predictable)

    – large bases from an aesthetic perspective

    – basic troop types but optional add ons for specific periods or conflicts

Ok, for me the search for the ideal ruleset goes on and I have tried most sets on the planet. The closest? Possibly Strength and Honour

The last time I paid for a hair cut I think you could buy a 15mm figure for 10p

I refuse to pay the Games Workshop prices but then I have no interest in their figures anyway….

The first consideration for me is quality followed by range followed by single figure purchase options and/or multipose packs followed by price. I like to mix and match all kinds of figures in my units which invariably means using a spectrum of manufacturers across all the price bands in practice. I thus tend to buy my figures at an ‘average’ price. This was when I bought 15mm. Now I have moved onto 10mm (historical) and so the questions and considerations are in fact relegated to ‘can I get hold of any figures for this army/period’ and then the price question is irrelevant
