ParticipantAlso about 7 hours in, and loving it so far. I don’t have a console and I work on a Mac, but I pay $5 month for Geforce Now, which allows me to play it via low/no latency video stream in 1080p and highest graphical settings. It requires a hefty internet connection, which I’m lucky enough to have access too, but man it’s crazy how well it works!

ParticipantThe gold was just army painter gold paint, whatever they call it, and dabbed soft tone over it. The blue is Talassar Blue contrast.

Participanthere’s my first attempt. Took me about 20 minutes to figure out how to do this one, rather than about 90 for my previous dwarves.

ParticipantI think it feels right, personally. Ideally the defender has plenty of opportunity to shoot the attacker several times on their way in. The attacker wants to limit their exposure until the last minute. If seemingly out of nowhere the defender has grenades bouncing around their positions, they’re in a bad spot, even if they’re in “a good spot”.

ParticipantIm really curious to see what people do with this. Heck, I might even try something! It would be an interesting exercise, filling out the fluff, when you’ve already done all the heavy lifting.
Slightly off topic; How do you rate on something on wargamevault? I assumed you just click the stars under the title, and after that didn’t work, neither did anything else I tried. How are you supposed to rate or leave reviews?

ParticipantHi Ivan, Does this ruleset support WW2 battles?
Until Ivan can respond… Core is completely generic. It can absolutely be used for WWII, though there is nothing specific to it in the core rules. Just decide how you’d like to stat your units and you’re good. I’m sure Toolkit will have more stuff included that would be helpful to WWII players, though even better will be Hammer Of Democracy, which will be a self-contained WWII version of the Squad Hammer game.
All that said, Core is Pay What You Want, so there’s no reason not to get it and get head start. Go on, get it!

ParticipantQuestion for the group. What do you play as “concealed”? And how to you compare concealed vs bad shot?
Totally had the same question. It might be an oversight. I don’t know. In play, I counted units IN cover, or touching a linear obstacle as “concealed”, and then everything else (smoke, shooting around cover, intervening terrain, etc.) as “Bad Shot”.
I did exactly the same. Not confusing, I was just curious what other people’s preferences were.

ParticipantIve been wary of changing default HP from 7, as its just so easy to track with single mini dice, but I’ve also never tried it and haven’t observed the conversation. I’ll see about giving it a go this week.

ParticipantThat was me 🙂
From my reply on facebook:
” the suppression rules we use (which we did by mistake but decided we like them) are that you must pass a Morale Check, rolling equal or higher than the current damage to Engage or Redeploy, otherwise they fail to activate. If returning fire, pass morale or be forced to fall back. We also, however, say that every unit is killed on 7 damage, and choose weapon stats based on that. Especially resilient units we’ll give armor that reduces the damage roll by 1 or very rarely 2 (and on the other hand sometime units will have armor piercing that ignores that reduction)”
Not my own variant, but I’ll note that I like to use the Trench Hammer variant for things like penalties for 4+ damage (we call it shaken), assaults, and leaders.
I’ve brought up our suppression variant here before, though Ivan noted he was concerned about unit penalties snowballing, which is a valid concern. One reason that hasn’t come up much with us is perhaps that we play with more units than recommended, usually in the 12-18 range, so there are often other units to support when one needs to withdraw and regroup.

ParticipantThey did! I think the Americans won games 2 and 3. The first game was especially hard on the US players as they were cursed with poor movement rolls, combined with the US paratrooper players on the other end of the table having a very difficult time destroying all 4 of the artillery pieces that were shelling the beach every turn. They still managed to kill the guns and at least one pillbox, but it wasn’t enough to win the day.
The next two games provided much more challenge to the german players, partly from better luck from the US, but also I suspect they players were more experienced with both wargaming and wwii history, allowing them to act much more aggressively and do what was needed to be done! By game 3, our US players had destroyed 3 of the pillboxes and were making their way through the trenches, and the paratroopers had made quick work of the guns and were taking over the village!

ParticipantThanks! Hail Of Fire are “fast-play” rules I’ve written with a focus on fog of war. They’re on Wargamevault.com as “Pay What You Want” so feel free to check them out for free and see if they interest you. Scale-wise, a base is a half-squad, gun, or vehicle. They’ve been tagged “Beta” for the last 2 years, as I continually play games my self, take feedback online, and make tweaks to the rules. I’m actually planning on uploading v1 before new years and finally removing Beta from the title. More tweaks and content to come, but likely as supplemental rather than constant changes to core rules.

ParticipantI put mine up at “pay what you want” and got about 100 download in the first couple weeks, which was about as many as I’d gotten in the previous year+ from my website. They also offer other conveniences, such as the ability to contact everyone who has downloaded the game to let them know there is a free updated pdf they can come download.
90+% of my downloads are for free, but the “tip jar” motif is encouraging 🙂
I’d recommend it.

ParticipantI agree with the point about them being a place to start. If you’re the type who ends up house-ruling your games anyway (like many of us) then NSIS is hard not to recommend if you’re looking for a sci fi game with a more “realistic” (whatever that means) feel. At $9.99 I’d say go add it to your digital collection asap.
