ParticipantThanks! Do you have any recommendations for books where I find more information on SYW warships?

ParticipantAlso, I’ve found that die-cast models and soft plastic figures are essential, since they’re much less likely to get damaged.
Now that is a good idea! I’ll see what I can get – perhaps some plastic knights and stuff like that?

ParticipantWe’ve now played two games using modified Galleons & Galleys rules. It worked very well and was great fun!

ParticipantAnyway, wargaming, to paraphrase AHGC, is bringing history to life. The props and mechanisms used are largely irrelevant, if they succeed in tripping that little switch in your brain which says “some historical verity here”, it is a war game. Cheers Martin
Yep. That’s why I like the motto of WS&S magazine so much: “Playing with History”.
I don’t need any more definition, but then I’m neither a scholar writing on the subject nor am I competing with someones else about who is more wargamery than the other 🙂
EDIT: And of course that includes sci-fi and fantasy for me, as it’s still history, just imaginary (after all, it happened a long time ago in a galaxy far away…) 🙂
EDIT 2: Which, of course, boils down to: Wargaming is what I want it to be.
Sorry for my not very constructive (to say nothing about logical consistency…) contribution.

ParticipantNice! I wrote a review of the book for Miniature Wargames. I quite like it, it’s very inspiring and the games they staged are fascinating – and who else can claim to have played a miniature wargames set during the Russian Revolution in the Winter Palace?

ParticipantYes, the rules deal with that: A vessel under sails always has to make one compulsive move, even if the activations failed. How far it moves depends on its heading in relation to the wind, obviously.

ParticipantThanks!
In Sharp Practice, the ‘Tiffin’ card means the turn ends, regardless whether all of your units were activated or not. This can be quite frustrating at times, but forces you to prioritize…

ParticipantHi!
Another one: Harriet Tubman was an escaped slave who helped other slaves get to the North and who later worked for the Union Army:

ParticipantCheers, guys, I haven’t checked the thread for some time and there are some great suggestions here!
I’ve been recommended Banks several times and tried to get into his novels… I just couldn’t relate. I really want to like him, his world building is clever and basically I like everything about him, the novels just didn’t captivate me. Perhaps I’ll try again!

Participantmost favorite: medieval, space opera sci-fi. however, it’s not so much periods as playing style: as long as it’s a skirmish game, I enjoy all kinds of periods.
least favorite: modern, ultramodern, postmodern, modern talking

ParticipantSorry, that may have been a bit unclear: What I meant was just that we have an emotional investment into the hobby. If I would take all your lovely painted figures and sprayed them black, would you just laugh and say: Nevermind, they are just models?
I think you are mixing up ‘important’ with ‘Important to me.’
That was exactly my point: What is important to you may not be important to me and vice versa. Some people don’t care about getting the uniforms correct, for others that’s the most important thing etc.
But as far as we can tell, no one doesn’t like casualty figures, that’s my point – We are discussing a problem that doesn’t exist.
Well, Mike said he didn’t use them (he didn’t exactly state he doesn’t like them). I don’t use them and don’t especially like them (although I’ve played in game where they were used). So there’s two.
Also, I don’t think we live in a world where people get increasingly offended. What we do is live in a world where – due to social and technological (media) developments – people who wouldn’t be heard in the public in former times now have a voice. Welcome to democracy! The challenge now is to figure out a way to balance out these voices. Saying: “oh, you are not _really_ offended, you just want to be” is a way of silencing those voices. Who is to judge whose matter of concern is legitimate and whose is not?

ParticipantSorry, that may have been a bit unclear: What I meant was just that we have an emotional investment into the hobby. If I would take all your lovely painted figures and sprayed them black, would you just laugh and say: Nevermind, they are just models?
I guess what I wanted to say is that no one – not even we – is neutral, unemotional, detached when he or she looks at a wargaming setup. Some feel a bit queasy about unpainted figures, others about Confederate battle flags. One’s queasiness isn’t more legitimate than the other’s.
I think it’s more interesting to have a discussion about why people don’t like casualty figures, gaming ultra modern or Age of Sigmar than it is to dismiss all those people as damned PC liburals who are out to take away my toys OMG!!!
My blog: http://wargamingraft.wordpress.com
Shandy
ParticipantHm, a pity that this discussion degraded into a ‘evil offended PC people will bring us all down!!!’ rant.
I found the comments by Norm Smith and Michael very interesting. I think context is paramount and offending someone is not an innate right constituting human nature. So, if the game isn’t ‘just a game’ for someone, maybe it won’t hurt to listen why the person feels that way? Maybe, when talking and discussing the issue (casualty figures, Confederate battle flags, whatever), we all can learn more about the place of violence and war – and the fascinating it has – in our society.
I’m getting a bit tired of the ‘just a game’ or ‘just a model’ argument, which is always thrown in when something is criticized. Of course it’s not just a game, otherwise you wouldn’t spend thousands of Euros on figures or long hours on painting. We are all involved, otherwise we’d do something different. And what we make are representations and representations always have meanings – and those meaning are as divers as the people looking at them. So I don’t think it’s wasted time to think about those meaning and to also think about what our representations may mean to people which don’t know anything about the peculiar world of wargaming.

ParticipantEveryone knows that 15mm is the new 28mm! 🙂
… and 6mm is the new 15mm (look at the Joy of Six show and how they replace 15mm for mass battles). And, in consequence, 3mm is the new 6mm (the Roman ranges from Magister Militium for those who really want the mass effect).
Hm… have I just discovered a trend towards ever smaller figures? Reverse scale creep?

ParticipantHi!
The Haitian Revolution is an exciting period for wargaming – Napoleonic uniforms in the jungle do look neat!
The latest installment in the Wargaming Warrior Women series presents some of the female combatants which fought in the insurgents ranks. To find out more, visit https://wargamingraft.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/women-combatants-in-the-haitian-revolution/

ParticipantThere is also Rastlworld Minis: http://www.rastlworldminis.com/ They seem to have gone down the peculiar route of starting their range with scantily-clad Russian horse artillery women (I know the web caters for every taste under the sun but this one seems to be more niche than most).
Oh god, I wish I hadn’t seen those – I don’t know what’s worse, the sexism or the bad sculpting
Mike, there is a guy named Richard who runs a company called Elite Wargames and Models. They don’t have a website yet, but you can contact him at [email protected]
However, they don’t do WSS, they only do napelonics. The figures are good though and wear proper uniforms.

ParticipantFor the first time, I’m starting a project that revolves around one specific scenario. The figures will be used for others, of course, but I also want to build dedicated scenery which probably won’t be that useful for other situations.
However, when I started to think about it, I realized I’ve made a couple of buildings before that I still haven’t used yet
So I guess I enjoy scratch building scenery more than I thought. Or maybe I’m just stupider than I thought.

ParticipantCool, thanks for the info! Meanwhile, I did a virtual tour with google street view and also saw some ‘normal’ (straight) fences, so I might mix them – snake rail for some fields, straight rail for others. Hope that’s ok…

Participant15mm… although I got some nice 28mm figures as a gift, which I will use for small scale skirmishes using Ganesha Game’s rules. Anyway, I’m going to scratch build the fences, so I can do both if I’m particularly bored

I’ve seen images on some blog, they didn’t look too impressive but would work.
Perhaps I’ll try the Minifigs – most of my other napoleonics are Minifigs, so they would fit well, and I’m not too concerned about size difference anyway…

ParticipantWhen I’m in a game I like to believe I’m in the role of the miniature on the table and I do what I think it (he) would do even if it isn’t the best choice and without too much thinking.
That’s what makes a wargame for me. And that’s also the reason I don’t like chess, or many other strategy games, because they don’t deliver a narrative. I even frown when people start to calculate probabilities on the gaming table.
Also, I used to play Epic when it was still called Space Marine and sold in a separate box from Adeptus Titanicus. And boy did I play it badly. But it was my first proper wargame and I remember hours of fun losing against an Ork army which wasn’t played much better.

ParticipantI mainly play with my girlfriend, so concerning gender, we are pretty diverse, but not so concerning interests, political opinions etc.
Sometimes, I play with friends, but this is also by way of personal relations, so the group is not very diverse when it comes to social and cultural backgrounds. MAybe I will join a group one day… but I’ll certainly try silly hats, seems to be the thing to do!

ParticipantAnother one! This time, it’s Viking Warrior Women. While archaeological evidence is still inconclusive, there are lots of warrior women in Viking sagas and chronicles. Why not include some into your warband – it’s at least as plausible as having units of Berserkers or Jomsvikings. And there are new figures for them: Splintered Light has announced 15mm shield maidens and BadSquiddoGames has just released the first 28mm Viking warrior woman.

ParticipantHi!
Last weekend, we had nother game in our Haitian Revolution series. This time, we broke in the new beach mat and played an amphibious landing scenario.
For a detailed AAR and more images, visit https://wargamingraft.wordpress.com/2015/05/01/beach-assault-another-sharp-practice-aar/
Also, I have to say that the more I read about the period (I just finished Muir: Tactics and the Experience of Battle), the more my respect for Rich’s work in rules design grows… Playing Sharp Practice, I have the feeling I understand better what happened on the small level in napoleonic battles. And the rules still deliver tremendously fun games!
Cheers
