Alan MillicheapParticipantAlan MillicheapParticipant
I’ve used Future War Commander for the 1859 Franco-Austrian War and for the 1904-05 Russo-Japanese War
Think really, really, really low-tech armies
The rules worked fine although it is a bit of a grind with infantry-heavy armies as there is lots of dice rolling
Alan MillicheapParticipantSmiley Faces? Yes I do enjoy the odd rave now and again although it’s taking me longer and longer to recover from an all-nighter
And there’s me worrying about a man on a horse on the roof of the stable
Hopefully it’s given you some food for thought – a good rules engine should open up a world (or worlds) of possibilities
General Slade – my parents disapproved of the Beano, the Dandy and the Victor – I was brought up on Look and Lean and Ron Embleton’s amazing illustrations within those pages. That’s where my fascination with Mexican history began.

Alan MillicheapParticipantThe Tudor Arms at Slimbridge, Gloucestershire would be a good venue – see Tudor Arms
This year we have had weekends for Cold War Commander, Future War Commander & LADG. I think that we are having a refight of Midway as well
There is a big skittle alley, good beer and food plus accommodation and it’s free. We can fit about a dozen 6×4 tables into the alley
Alan
Alan MillicheapParticipantHere are some that TSS made specifically for me
More pics here Magenta
Alan MillicheapParticipantI’ve been playing the Pax Arcs for 8 years now so time for a change
Something non-Human – maybe GW Eldar, Baccus Centuars or even Ogrethulu
Alan MillicheapParticipantNo – at Chez Rodges – it will be appearing at the club soon
Alan MillicheapParticipantWhat Chris said
See half way down http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/2016/04/bloody-big-battles-bash-day-2016.html for pics of the Königgrätz refight
and if you are anywhere near Oxford this Saturday then coming along to the BBB Bash day to see it being refought (again!)
Alan MillicheapParticipantThe topic heading brought back memories of Walking Holidays in North Wales. Impossible to get a pint on a Sunday.
Alan MillicheapParticipantI think they do – I’ve complied a list
see http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/p/russo-japanese-war.html
Alan
Alan MillicheapParticipantI think the original model was a toy digger found in a skip or a car boot sale
That revell kit looks very nice – not cheap though
Alan MillicheapParticipantYou produce some really nice kit
Alan MillicheapParticipantThe rules are excellent
It was frustrating because neither of us could barely roll above 6 on 2 dice. At the start of the game one of my Austrian Brigades decided to camp out on one of the two bridges across the otherwise impassable river and stayed there for the entire game
In the real battle the French tore into the Austrians relentlessly and gave them a good kicking
Alan MillicheapParticipantI didn’t know you were a plumber?
Alan MillicheapParticipantFor several years I’ve been doing 1985 in 6mm using Cold War Commander – I have a fair sized chunk of the Belgian 1st Corps and have just started on some Soviet opposition
Alan MillicheapParticipantSeveral members of the Berkeley Vale Club are going
Alan MillicheapParticipantWarband by Pendraken are popular at the BVC although I’ve not played them. They are aimed at 10mm but the lads use them with 28mm. The army lists are geared towards Pendraken’s fantasy range but having had a glance through the lists there is probably enough to put LOTR armies together
Alan
Alan MillicheapParticipantHere is a link to the rules
Alan MillicheapParticipantThe guy who did the models sent me this
===========
The original bugs template seems to have become corrupted somewhere along the line and I can’t get it to open. However, it was a freebie easily available online via a search for ‘Papercraft Warrior Bug’ and I’ve found a modern equivalent here:starship-troopers-papercraft-warrior
although it seems to have evolved a little since I originally did them but if anything the newer version looks better!
===========He also sent me a pdf of the rules which I shall load up to the interweb at some point
Alan
Alan MillicheapParticipantLovely terrain – well done
Alan MillicheapParticipantThey were 1 page bug hunt type games
Naturally we suggested a few changes to the rules as is the Berkeley Vale Club way 🙂
Alan MillicheapParticipantAn AAR of Laserstorm at Blast-tastic on my blog
Alan MillicheapParticipantSteve Price and I had an enjoyable day playing (learning how to play) Laserstorm – a set for big fast games. Maybe it’s a bit odd using a show to learn a set of rules but due to club members dropping out, not wanting to play FWC and having just bought the rules it seem like the logical thing to do. It generated a fair bit of interest as well.
We played 2 games – bugs attacking a fort held by colonial marines and the introductory scenario from the ruleset.
The other games on display were very good. I liked the sunken battleship from Dave M’s Stingray game, the Ogrethullu from the ASL game and game where the terrain lit up.
I spent all of my money on 6mm stuff from Angel Barracks & Brigade Models
We will definitely be there next year
Alan MillicheapParticipantWe treat the base as the built up area – the buildings are just for show – so vehicles can be placed anywhere
Elsewhere on the board was a bua with a greenhouse – at one point there was a T80 sitting on top of it – should have taken a photo of that one
Alan
Alan MillicheapParticipantThere was 300 square feet of table – my Belgians played in 18 square feet of it
Alan MillicheapParticipantI do the bare minimum to avoid painting – limber and 2 horses plus in 10mm I usually add the gun.
I also try to reuse the limbers so my FPW French limbers also make an appearance in my RJW Japanese army
Alan MillicheapParticipantThe rules were written by one of the club members. In fact he did everything for the game – painted the figures and made the buildings and terrain. The rest of us were just there to help run the game
I do recall that there was a photo of the game in one of the wargame mags covering the Salute report that year
I will keep an eye out for the Haitian game at Salute this year
Alan
Alan MillicheapParticipantCrikey! that brings back memories
The Hitchin wargames club put a game of the Haitian Revolt on at Salute sometime before 1992. I think ours was 25mm Haitians v French
Nice looking game btw
Thanks for the memory recall
