That will certainly make it a lot easier to keep fire teams or sections/squads together.
I can see the advantages of this kind of movement, and the need to use activation points to shoot means you would need to balance the need to move a group, or the need to put rounds down range, so that kind of balances things out.
I will have to try in in a game to see what effect, if any, it has on a game.
shelldrakeParticipantYou used the Company commander for your activations – why not try using the Platoon Commander for activations, with the Company commander following the rules for “Platoon NCO and higher level attachements” on page 27?
That way each platoon can move regardless, you wont over stress your Company commander, and you get that little bit more chance of activation through your company commander.
shelldrakeParticipantI finished off my Aussies today:
You can read about them and some future plans on my blog: http://shelldrakewargames.blogspot.com.au/2014/11/finished-15mm-modern-aussies.html
shelldrakeParticipantGee, if we are going to hypnotise people, can we throw an ASLAV (and variants) in to the variant mix? My Aussies need between three and five of them.
shelldrakeParticipantWoot! I wish I had a man cave.
shelldrakeParticipantFantastic scenery!
shelldrakeParticipantI tend to stay clear of scenario books unless it is packaged with a supplement that adds to the game, such as new rules or campaign rules etc.
I either use history for my scenario ideas or come up with one based on the figures and scenery I have at hand.

I did my bit and did some ‘pimping’ on my blog last week.Thank you sir, it is appreciated. The more people know, the more people are likely to come. What is your blog?
My blog is a very small one, with a humble following, so I may have only reached one or two people: http://shelldrakewargames.blogspot.com.au/
shelldrakeParticipantI play the game using 1:600 Tumbling Dice, and they pose no problem what so ever.
The rules are good – each player has to plot the moves for each plane before the turn starts, with certain pilots being able to make slight adjustments to their movement depending on the situation.
shelldrakeParticipantJust kidding, we don’t believe either of you have an integrity issue, we just like to fawn over pretty pictures of stuff. V/R, Jack
What Jack said 🙂 Eye candy is good for the hobby… well, at least for motivating me in my hobby
shelldrakeParticipantI hope so 🙂
I did my bit and did some ‘pimping’ on my blog last week.
shelldrakeParticipantPhotos or it didn’t happen!
18/11/2014 at 21:03 in reply to: French Foreign Legion Hypothetical Scenario in Estonia, Fight 1 #12824shelldrakeParticipantA great start to the campaign, and I agree with the frustration, and the fact it is good for solo games.
shelldrakeParticipantthanks 🙂
shelldrakeParticipantshelldrakeParticipantHaving paid full price, I can highly recommend that anyone thinking of getting the rules jumps at this sale – it is well worth it.
shelldrakeParticipantMy desk currently has 15mm Modern Aussies & North Koreans, and 28mm Pulp type figures: a number of bits and pieces I am painting up so I can play my first game of Pulp Alley.
shelldrakeParticipantI was all excited until I noticed they are not shipped to Australia, which I can understand if the postage is going to be high.
shelldrakeParticipantI was dark that I could never get a set of the John Jenkins hopping vampires – they were right out of the film ‘Mr Vampire’ and they were lovely looking minis too.
shelldrakeParticipantI just took advantage of the QRF 15% sale that is on from 13 NOV to 17 NOV 14 and purchased a T-55 for the North Koreans and a M1 Abrams for the Aussies.
QRF also informed me that my BTR is on its way downunder, so I look forward to that very much.
shelldrakeParticipantThe reason it’s set up a certain way is to allow troops to be pushed out of positions so just be aware of how to handle that, and you’ll be beer and skittles.
The other day I actually wanted to fail my shock check so that my troops would fall back in to cover so I could remove the pins and treat the wounds. I rolled two 6s in a row
shelldrakeParticipantYou mentioned not being able to play again for awhile as your friend isn’t available; do what us friendless guys do, play solo!
I certainly will be, in fact the replay will be a solo game. Two of the reasons I purchased the rules was it’s ability to play solo games, and campaign games. With out these, I might not have bought them.
shelldrakeParticipantThanks for the comments guys.
The trees I found on ebay and made the bases for, the ‘grass clumps’ are aquarium plants and the buildings I made over a decade ago for a colonial campaign, with the exception of the foam building, which I made about 2 – 3 months ago as a trial.
All the vegetation was made for 28mm games, so I have ordered slightly smaller trees to bring the size down a bit.
If I had played with a whole platoon I might have kept the fire-lane in the middle, but with only a section we both agreed that only an idiot would prevent half of the section being able to support the other if needed.
I made the mistake of putting the taller buildings on one side – the opposite side to where I was coming on, and paid for it.
Fences and Hedges (no, not a cigarette brand!) will be made for this game, as will other line of sight blocking items.
I like the idea of using greyed out soldiers for blinds. I will certainly give that a go at a later date.
shelldrakeParticipantThe font colour makes the text hard to read for my five cents worth.
shelldrakeParticipantWhen you get the BTR, mind snapping a few pictures? I love me some wheeled commies but the pictures on the site aren’t always the best.
Will do. I will use the Mrs’s camera which is 900% better than my own. If I remember I will take photos when I first open it, when I have put it together and once it is finished.
shelldrakeParticipantyay! my latest two squads of North Koreans turned up today, so I have prepared them and the Heavy weapons pack I had yet to open ready for the painting line. This gives me a Platoon of NKs (less a Platoon HQ, which isn’t made ) to go up against my Aussies.
I ordered my first vehicle for the game today – a BTR-60 from QRF for the North Koreans. The first of many that is. I also want to get some tanks for them.
I have almost finished all the standard Aussie sections/fire teams, with only the heavy weapon fire teams and the EOD figures to paint.
Once these are done I will look at getting five Bushmasters for the Aussie platoon, as well as some M1A1 tanks, and maybe some AUSLAV-25s for recon purposes.
Things are starting to come together for the game
shelldrakeParticipantJust make sure the BMP-2 is destroyed in an appropriate place to give cover after it has gone
shelldrakeParticipantFor blog-browsing I use ‘Feedly’ which is a free RSS reader. Just copy the home page of a blog and add it to Feedly and you have a daily newspaper on all of your favourite blogs. Sorry for the thread hijack.
shelldrakeParticipantSweet – nice AAR, and thanks for posting.
shelldrakeParticipantMore Aussies painted, complete with dodgy photo:
The photo shows my entire collection of Painted Aussies to date: Sniper team to the left front, Platoon HQ next to the snipers, and two fire teams, which make a section in the rear.
I now have enough Aussies and North Koreans painted up for a “clash of clearing patrols” for want of a better term.
I have the second section well on the way to being finished, with the third section being prepared.
Depending on how time goes this coming week I will try to kick off my ‘No End In Sight” campaign with a section vs squad game if the forests of “Primorsky” after the North Koreans invaded the former Russian area following the departure of Primorshy Krai from Russian control
shelldrakeParticipantSlightly off topic, I’ve been reading the Twilight 2000 Wiki. Are there any books/novels associated with these alternative histories?
The Twilight 2000 RPG had some source books, but apart from that, the best you can find are novels, with Larry Bond writing most of them. He has novels set in Europe, Korea and Africa, and well as a modern one of a Chinese invasion of Vietnam.
shelldrakeParticipantYou have been busy judging by the photos on your blog!
I had to laugh at your rule ideas for NEIS Platoon Sergeants. Spoken like a true NCO
shelldrakeParticipantAbsolutely.
And one good thing about a future ‘what if’ is that I can change the orbats to anything I like.
shelldrakeParticipantOk, I painted these weeks ago, but have only just pulled my finger out and taken a (dodgy) photo:
My first squad of North Koreans. The flash washed out the cammo on the helmets, but you can just make it out on a few of them, as well as the collar patches/insignia:
Khurasan sells them in packs of 12 as a whole squad. One of my bits of research agrees with the 12 man squad, but the number of LMG & RPG should be at three each, not two each. As it is very unlikely any command figures will be made, I have decided to cull the squad down to ten men, divided in to two fire-teams of five men each.
If the figures were sold individually I would have been able to purchase the exact figure types I want for my enemy platoon.
This will leave me with two figures spare, two of which I will use as a platoon commander and a platoon sergeant. With the other two NK squads on the way to me, this will give me some spare figures, which I can use to command the heavy weapons teams I have, and maybe add a sig (by way of conversion) and a medic to the platoon HQ.
On a side note, I noticed that Eureka Miniatures has some Modern Chinese PLA in their ‘300 club’, so I will probably put an order in for those, which means I should be able to have a detailed enemy force if the figures go ahead and are produced.
shelldrakeParticipantThey look good. Now lets see them in action !!
Not until I have at least a fully painted section
shelldrakeParticipantMy Australian Platoon HQ painted up awaiting a coat or two of protective varnish:
shelldrakeParticipantI purchased Pulp Alley just over a week ago now, and I am busy paiting up the figures in my lead pile to get my leagues up and running, so this is helping with the groove
shelldrakeParticipantI need a reason why USSR doesn’t move in and ‘actively’ bring them back into the fold immediately. With DDR splitting from WarPact, NATO immediately hops in with equipment and money, but after a year or so we have leadership and the population splitting into two very distinct elements: pro-democracy, and pro-socialist. Open conflict breaks out. I think I still need a reason USSR doesn’t crush it immediately. I think later you can argue NATO offers the former DDR protection as a burgeoning democracy, and so both NATO and WarPact counterbalance each other, staying out of the fighting for fear of turning it into WWIII. Interesting, and I appreciate everyone’s concepts, and still open to more ideas. V/R, Jack
the USSR is embroiled with another Russian Civil War; With Brezhnev dying in 1982 a power struggle begins for control of the country. This flares up in to a civil war.
Or, with the failure of the Afghan war plus the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 creates increased public dissatisfaction with the Communist regime, again leading to a civil war.
Regardless of why, a civil war within the USSR would be one reason why East Germany is ignored… and who know what other countries will follow suit, leaving the Warsaw Pact weaker.
shelldrakeParticipantYou could base the war on Larry Bond’s novel “Red Storm Rising”, with the focus of your game set in Germany rather than playing out any of the parts set in Iceland.
shelldrakeParticipantI finally purchased my 15mm Modern Australian’s from Eureka Miniatures for the game:
I tried to edit the photo to include numbers to explain the platoon+ , but the editor cracked a wobbly on me.
In the box are a 4 man Platoon HQ, three 8 man sections of two 4 man fire teams each, three 4 man Manoeuvre Support Teams, a 2 man sniper team, a 3 man IED disposal team, and a 6 man Joint Fires Team.
I was going to buy three Bushmasters for the platoon, but they were out of my budget for the moment.
~ ~ ~
I have painted up my first squad of North Koreans, and I ordered the figures for the other two squads a good few weeks ago, but they were only posted this week, so I have a few weeks to wait for them.
I also found out that Khurasan are unlikely to make Officers and Senior NCO figures to go with their NK squad packs, which is a bit disappointing, and may have influenced my ordering of the North Koreans had I known before hand.
I might be able to get around this by making the North Korean squads 10 or 11 men instead of 12 mean, and pinch a squad leader to be an officer.
