The point is though that English longbowmen did get into melee and were expected to once the melee was joined. It’s what makes them stand out from most other pre-gunpowder missile troops.

I’m thinking more Western European or outright fantasy. An oriental necromancer wouldn’t fit my background. Thanks anyway though.

Just a waste of ammunition. If you allowed it the chance to hit should be infinitesimally small.
A dust cloud would indicate a moving vehicle. Hitting a moving vehicle you can see with indirect fire should be extremely difficult, never mind one hidden by a hill. And where in the dust cloud is it? The only blind firing I know of is pre-planned against a known target, crossroads, trenches etc.
TFL’s use of blinds covers this very well. Vehicles on a blind as they are out of sight. You know something’s there but not what or it’s exact position.

Maybe if the terrain board was more visible? Though judging by the responses to my thread I’m the only one who thinks so.

I’m well into Plains of Abraham at the minute but skipped through the first chapter of Empires Collide which brought something to my attention.
In PoA it states Washington ambushed a French force that was about to ambush him, thus firing the first shots of the FiW and, by extension, the SYW. However, in EC, it states that Washington attacked the French unprovoked.
Do we know which of these is true? I suppose they both could be, technically, but there’s a world of difference between turning the tables on a dastardly frog scheme and murdering members of a peaceful French party who were undoubtedly on an excursion to gather wild flowers or something equally innocuous.
I will stress again that I have only dipped in to Empires Collide so the whole thing may be explained later.

I’m on a FiW bender at the moment so Last of the Mohicans is right up there. Barry Lyndon is Kubrick’s best film as far as I’m concerned.
Culloden is wonderful if you are lucky enough to have seen it. For those who haven’t, it’s a sort of drama/documentary with battlefield interviews done by a roving reporter. Sounds ghastly but it works beautifully.
Available here with The War Game. http://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Game-Culloden-DVD/dp/B00008NNLF/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1409695769&sr=1-1&keywords=culloden/ French edition but the dialogue is English.
As said above, The Patriot is just a terrible film, never mind the inaccuracies, and Revolution is just dull.

Edit: still having problems with links.

Bolt Action is cheap on Amazon at the minute as a Kindle download. Also the German and Russian army books. I’d recommend I Ain’t Been Shot Mum first but Bolt Action are cheap and fun.

I’d only have to go back 2 or 3 years to grab the Strelets Norman foot and archers sets, Saxons and probably Vikings, about 6 boxes each. Some of the most useful 1/72 sets ever with no silly poses. All designed to be ranked up in shieldwalls.
These sold out everywhere in short order. Unfortunately, for reasons best known to Strelets, these were a limited run and are no longer available. There was talk of a re-release but nothing seems to have come of it.

I think it’s too early to start adding boards. Give it a while, a few months at least, then see how people feel. Not that Bandit’s idea is necessarily a bad one, but if you start now then everyone with a pet niche interest will be at your door.

EDIT: Maybe have a cap on the total number of boards? Say 5 more than there are now? Then if that total is reached any new boards would mean another would have to go? The posts redistributed or just added to general, not deleted. Just thinking out loud. As I said above, I wouldn’t be adding anything just yet. Let things settle and then see what’s needed.

I’d love to recommend Through the Mud and the Blood but they’re too small scale for you. The only others that come to mind are Warhammer Great War (out of print and extortionate prices 2nd hand) and FoW Great War (still 1:1 but multi based).
    Not much help I’m sure.
You could try Blitzkrieg Commander. It’s a WWII set but uses one stand:one section (or platoon- up to you). As long as you have the WWI OOBs you should be OK. Might need some tweaking to represent bombers, rifle grenadiers and lmg sections. These are just rolled into the stats for WWII as everybody had a go but they operated in distinct, specialised sections in WWI.
And I would still recommend TtMatB just for the historical notes and organisations. Invaluable, especially the artillery section.

I’d suggest 15mm.co.UK as first stop. After that the usual suspects. GZG, Rebel Minis, Khurasan, Armies Army. You should be able to find what you’re after from that lot.
Thinking about it, GZG are probably the best bet for militia types. Check out their colonists.

Not keen on 1/72 ancients. I have a large collection of Hat and Revell WWI but the various ancient ranges never appealed. Also, I would like some compatibility with my medieval 28s (for the creatures at least).

Thanks for the answers and I think Victrix are the way to go. Unarmoured actually makes more sense for guys who spend most of their time on ships.
