Funnily enough I’ve been having an internal debate on whether to go green or not for my Dragon Rampant Goblins. In the end I’ve decided to go with a pale flesh colour. It fits in more with Tolkein’s background and I prefer the look.

“Is this kind of “Fog of War” available without an umpire?”

Not in my experience. Even using blinds you still have an idea where most of the enemy are/maybe and can manouevre accordingly.

“Are we all kidding ourselves that any rule system can truly simulate anything resembling real warfare?”

    We are kidding ourselves.

Hope to get to see you at the show Robey and look forward to the release date of your rules. I would have liked to have a go at them, but will obviously have to wait a bit…

    10mm AVBCW bits’n’bobs

6mm KR-16 Juraped riders and dismounted option

10mm AWI/Imagi-Nation forces that are about to be rebased. Luckily I haven’t gone too far down the road of basing them all…

I’d also recommend Pendraken in 10mm. I saw some 12mm figures last week in a WWI game and thought they were 15mm they were that chunky. They were Magister Militum so not sure how they compare to others. Pendraken have added a lot over the past year to their WWI range so well worth a look IMHO.

“The issue now is to choose my shots carefully.  What scale?  What rules?  What will actually be painted and hit the table top?  How much of my time, energy and money will I allocate to gaming?”

First of that’s awful to have had a load of your stuff stolen. But at least your words above show that you are taking a very sensible route back into the hobby. I’ve downsized a lot over the past few years due to many of the points you have raised. I’m a lot happier for it and still need to shift some more stuff.

At first I wanted to go very detailed on my terrain, but quicklt realised that this was completely impractical. So now I have a nice GW gaming mat and individual pieces of terrain (fields, hills etc) that can be placed as required. Everything is based in a coherent way so it still looks nice but is very finctional at the same time.

Great AAR Sparker and nice to see a small scale action. Still undecided on these rules, mainly as I don’t think they’ll work for solo games.

In the UK we can go to a DIY store and get emulsion paint mixed to pretty much any colour you want. Not sure if you have that option in Brazil?

Re: old school trees, I vaguely remember someone making some simple 2D profile trees that actually looked pretty good, as they matched the rest of the terrain in visual terms.

You’ve now given me food for thought on this Thaddeus, as ‘old school’ is becoming rather tempting…

    You have two options IMHO:

Go properly ‘old school’ and leave them as they are. That then raises the issue of do they work with th rest of your terrain? Somehow I think this actually works really well with the figures.

Go ‘modern basing’ with grit and flock. This is the route I will choose simply as I then don’t have to make any different terrain!

Oh my are those nice! Excellent job Thaddeus. The single basing works out far better than I thought it would. I know my hands are too shaky for that these days.

I’ve bought some sample figures and agree that they are brilliant. I’ve based my for Black Powder on 30mm x 15mm bases, with two rows of four figures. I’ll try and put some pics up later, once I’ve found the camera!

As for basing, I flocked mine so that they fit in with my gaming mat and scenery. I did consider going ‘old school’, but then I’d want to have terrain that looked ‘old school’ as well. Time and space preclude that option at present. The only thing I would say is that for me ‘old school’ looks right when based in nice regimented rank and file. Personally I would keep them in neat strips.

It’s only a game after all. I’m very lucky that my wargaming chums and I all share the same ethos when it comes to our games. We bathtub, we use ‘counts as’ units for new periods, we play ‘what if?’ scenarios/campaigns. All of this works for us and gives us immense pleasure. Others may hate the way we play, but frankly we don’t care. But to belittle someones attitude to gaming is beyond the pale IMHO.

Pendraken Miniatures. Excellent customer service, great prices and lovely sculpts, especially anything by Clibinarium. They also listen to what customers want to see, hence the newly announce WWII Poles and Aztecs.

Commission Figurines. 6mm MDF figures that have a wonderful ‘Pippin Fort’ quality to them. Superb value and when on the games table you can’t tell that they are mdf figures.

A good guide to the game is the version 4 file in the Yahoo group, linked below:

    https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/honoursofwar/files

The book will differ slightly from the above, but not massively so I’m told. For our games a stand of figure equates to a Battalion, with say 3-4 making a Brigade. Fear not the rules do not use cards in any way, shape or form. All you need are a couple of D6 and an average die.

    Hope this helps?

Parliamentarians for ECW, due to a variety of factors.

Austrians for Black Powder due to having friends from Linz.

Fallschirmjager and British Paras for WWII.

Well, I have Cold War Commander, but sold off my minis a few years ago due to lack of games. With Pendraken looking to increase their Cold War offerings, this book might just get me back into playing this ‘period’. After all, I could always do with yet more additions to my leadpile to languish undistrubed for years in the attic!

in reply to: Rule Books. How do you like them? #31128
    Avatar photoSteve Johnson

Rules like BKCII, Lion Rampant, Dux Bellorum etc tick all the boxes for me. They are:

    • Affordable. BKCII was £20 and Lion Rampant etc I could buy off Amazon for around £8.00 inc P&P.
    • Everything in one book. So that’s the rules, examples and army lists.
    • No extraneous fluff. They are not padded out with painting guides, useless waffle etc.

Whilst I enjoy Black Powder as a ruleset, it could have been a third of the size and still worked. The forthcoming ‘Honours of War’ by Osprey is a case in point.
