Graham HarrisonParticipant
Thanks gents, it was nice to get them on the table after so long.
Graham HarrisonParticipantYou could try the fantasy version of Sword and Spear, that might fit what you are looking for.
I had a copy of Royal Armies of the Hyborian Age in my early teens. I tried to play a campaign with some mates using them, but it petered out because the rules were too complicated.
Graham HarrisonParticipantHow big are your commands? If the group got on with TMWWBK why not try The Pikeman’s Lament? At least it’s simple to pick up, especially if you have played Lion rampant. I’ve played a few big games of both LR and TPL with 3 commands on each side and it’s worked well.
Graham HarrisonParticipantI’m getting on with the Tuareg figures first, before tackling the French Foreign Legion. The plan (huh!) is that I start with the Tuaregs and Orcs paints his FFL first, so that we have enough for a couple of trial games quite quickly. Then I go and buy a load of stuff from Pendraken to fill all the gaps!

Graham HarrisonParticipantThis looks really fun, great minis and scenery too. I have noticed that a lot of new games (solo as well) use cards to drive the story and action. Do you think Spellswords would work for other genres?
Thank you.
I think Sellswords and Spellslingers would lend itself to many other genres. You could play anything where you wanted “heroic” characters, dropping the magic for anything historical (as I’ve pretty much done here for Middle Earth). I’ve been working on an idea to convert them to a Darkest Africa/Steampunk setting, where the magic is provided by weird and wonderful scientific inventions.
Graham HarrisonParticipantI played through my second Middle Earth Sellswords and Spellslingers scenario over the weekend. Hallas decided an aggressive approach was the best defence, trying to kill the orcs’ leadership as quickly as possible. Sitting on the river crossings would allow the orcs to concentrate in greater numbers and give the archers a static target.
Batrep here https://grahamsgaming.blogspot.com/2018/10/and-game.html
Graham HarrisonParticipantI’ve now written the scenario for the next game in this mini-adventure, which I hope to play over the weekend.
In the meantime the scenario is now on the blog https://grahamsgaming.blogspot.com/2018/10/second-scenario-for-sellswords-and.html
Graham HarrisonParticipantGraham HarrisonParticipantThank you chaps.
Rhoderic, I’m not planning on painting up any new figures for this (although I do like the Oathmark figures). I’ve already got 500+ fantasy figures for Middle Earth, plus about 300 Dark Age types, so I’m going to try and stick with using them. But we all know what happens to good intentions …..
Graham HarrisonParticipantMike, I aim to please! I will be looking at ideas of character corruption as this campaign continues.
I played my first game in my Arnor campaign, which I’m currently planning as a 3-game mini adventure (but that could change depending on what happens during the games).
Hallas and a patrol came across a mortally wounded royal messenger close to the Arthedain/Cardolan border. Before he died, the messenger told them that he had been ambushed by orcs and his message pouch had been taken. He did not know the content of the message, just that it was extremely important. Iavasonnen picked up the tracks of 4 Orcs and the group followed them for half a day before locating their camp at the edge of the Barrow Downs…..

Graham HarrisonParticipantThanks John, I’m halfway through the first game and hope to finish it later today.
Graham HarrisonParticipantThanks for the heads-up. I’ve bought from Blotz before and been very pleased with the quality of their products.
Graham HarrisonParticipantThanks Norm
Graham HarrisonParticipantAll the figures used are from Tiger Miniatures http://www.tigerminiatures.co.uk/
They have probably the most comprehensive range for this period.
Graham HarrisonParticipantI like those cataphracts! Are all these Pendraken?
There are a mix, some are Pendraken, but when I put the Sassanid army together they hadn’t released all of the Late Roman range yet, so at least one unit is from Magister.
Graham HarrisonParticipantI have now posted the two scenarios on the blog http://grahamsgaming.blogspot.com/2018/05/new-scenarios-for-sellswords-and.html
I’d appreciate any feedback if someone uses them.
Graham HarrisonParticipantWe played a refight of Saragossa 1710 at the last Tring Club Games Day, it was a lot of fun.
A lot of photos on the Tring Club blog http://tringwargames.blogspot.co.uk/2018/05/10mm-war-of-spanish-succession.html
but here’s a couple to be going on with.Graham HarrisonParticipantAnd two more Imperialist units! http://grahamsgaming.blogspot.co.uk/2018/05/a-confederate-army-for-war-of-spanish.html
Graham HarrisonParticipantThanks Johnathan, for an interesting post. I haven’t been to Chedworth in years and have never visited North Leigh. I think it looks like a day trip this summer to rectify that.
Graham HarrisonParticipantI have finally managed to get back to this project, after a prolonged gap. With the next big WSS game scheduled for mid-May I need to get the Confederate army finished (by “finished” I mean the word very loosely, more in the sense of enough done for this game).

Graham HarrisonParticipantThanks for your kind words gents.
Graham HarrisonParticipantah cool, so no rules for getting cold, blizzards blocking LOS or anything like that?
No nothing like that. In fact I haven’t bothered with snow or ice on any of my terrain or bases, that way with the addition of some vegetation my stuff becomes a Pulp/Darkest Africa Lost City.
Graham HarrisonParticipantThank you for the kind words.
I am always very impressed with Chris’ 6mm games, even his smaller club night ones. Mind you, he has outlaid quite a bit of cash on his mats and terrain, so that it looks good.
Graham HarrisonParticipantVery nice!
Graham HarrisonParticipantThey look really nice, but I haven’t seen then in the flesh (or resin). Even small 15mm might be a tad big for 10mm.

More details and pictures on the blog http://grahamsgaming.blogspot.co.uk/2018/02/a-confederate-army-for-war-of-spanish_23.html
I’ve also added flags to my Dutch regiments.
Graham HarrisonParticipantThanks gents.
cmnash: I’ll look forward to seeing some pictures of your Baccus project, they are very nice 6mm figures.
Hafen: Start off with smaller armies, say 20 or so units on each side until you are happy with the mechanisms. After than you should be able to handle 40+ units in an evening.
We had added various house rules, the main one being to reverse the order of moving/firing. We also restricted the movement of infantry to a wheel at the start of the move, otherwise straight ahead.Graham HarrisonParticipantNow for the start of the mounted contingent, a unit of dragoons (from the excellent League of Augsberg range) and two cavalry units. http://grahamsgaming.blogspot.co.uk/2018/02/a-confederate-army-for-war-of-spanish_21.html
Looking at the dragoons makes me think I really should get some more of these to replace my current French dragoons with these little beauties.Graham HarrisonParticipantThere are a number of possible Neanderthal attempts at art:
donald
Indeed there are and I do not think it is in doubt that Neanderthal’s could demonstrate artistic expression in both cave art and personal jewelry. But the article was about drawing realistic representations of animals, which is different to abstract dots and hand stencils.
Graham HarrisonParticipantThis is a great source for keeping up with the latest press releases in the field of archaeology https://exploratornews.wordpress.com/
Graham HarrisonParticipantSome more infantry, this time two Dutch battalions, one from Bruhese Regiment and one from Friesheim Regiment. Dutch regiments in Spain consisted of two battalions, but it would be a bit dull to field two identical units, so I’ve done one from each. http://grahamsgaming.blogspot.co.uk/2018/02/a-confederate-army-for-war-of-spanish_17.html
Graham HarrisonParticipantFor an evening game at the club, with 2 players, we usually use about 15-20 battalions of infantry and a similar amount of cavalry a side. that usually works for an evening game.
I ran an all day refight of the battle of Almanza, with 4 players. That used about 50 battalion of infantry on each side, plus 30-40 cavalry units. Four of us managed it in a day with no problems.
I tried the Shako variant some years ago and didn’t like it much, but then I’m not a fan of Shako anyway.
There is a write up on the Almanza game here http://tringwargames.blogspot.co.uk/2017/10/games-day-battle-of-almanza-25th-apr.html
Graham HarrisonParticipantWe use Black Powder, with house rules, which works for us.
Graham HarrisonParticipantExcellent!
Graham HarrisonParticipantNice one Hafen von Schlockenberg.
Four more pro-Carolean Spanish infantry for my new army. https://grahamsgaming.blogspot.co.uk/2018/02/a-confederate-army-for-war-of-spanish_14.html
I will be twiddling with the flags to make them “wavy”, when I get a roundtuit.
Graham HarrisonParticipantNice job on those!
Graham HarrisonParticipantThank you gents. Any pictures of your 10mm armies around?
Graham HarrisonParticipantI found it best to go straight to the manufacturers in China using https://www.aliexpress.com/
They have a secure payment process, if you hunt around you get some very cheap prices, although, as with Ebay, you will often find the same item at varying prices.
I’ve placed several orders now and had a good service. Some sellers offer very cheap, or even free, postage to the UK. There are periodic discount days when I’ve got up to 40% off the listed price!
Graham HarrisonParticipantA lovely army!
