ParticipantWow JJ you are getting good at this! I couldn’t see the cut lines at all and the finished ships are spectacular!

ParticipantWow the ships and rigging look really good Jeff and so does the rack. I bet one could do as well with some 1-1/2″ PVC pipe.

ParticipantThomaston,
Very nice! I don’t see the mistake you’re talking about with the masts? You can still get the sails on, none of the rigging appears in the way. I usually get this far before mounting sails so my fat fingers can get in and tie off the standing rigging easier. BTW, I notice these are not the acetate ratlines supplied with the BS models. Yours look much better!

ParticipantNice job JJ. It did look like you lengthened the hull with the cut just in front of the main channels, six guns aft and five guns forward. Came out really nice.

ParticipantThese armies are awesome Jeff! The painting is very good. The Punic wars was always my favorite ancients period. Now you need Gauls and Iberians, if you haven’t already done them.

ParticipantThanks Jeff. I added blocks to the frigate rigging as well. And yes I have seen some xebecs folks have made from the brigs. They are good ideas, but I think the brigs are just too fat to make a decent xebec. I believe the Black sails schooners would make a better xebec. They are much narrower. And besides, Henry Turner has a free 1/700 3D xebec on the Wargaming3D webside if I can just find someone to print it for me! Anyway it may be a while before I can get back to this scale. I just took a commission to kit bash four Sails of Glory ships. So that is going to occupy my limited shipyard time for the next couple of weeks or more.

ParticipantHaha nice tool to have! I have often thought of doing the same. I have 3 old Dremels. A flexible shaft with a chuck would be awesome.
On the unsightly mast clumps, try using a #8 thread to tie up the stay rather than the much thicker stay thread. The thin #8 thread is barely visible and if you touch it with a bit of paint it disappears into the mast entirely. I get it on Amazon, fly tying Uni-Thread.

ParticipantHi Jeff. Well let’s see, what are you using for thread? If it is cotton or has cotton in it you can wet the thread using a paint brush and warm water. As the thread dries it will shrink a bit. This might help a bit if the sagging is not too bad. Poly won’t shink at all. I usually run into the problem after I start stringing the running rigging. Every brace line starts adding a bit more tension to the masts resulting in previous lines slacking. I try to spread the masts against the stays to keep their tension while I secure the brace lines. This works most times, sometimes not.
I know most folks don’t like cotton because it can “fuzz”, but I use it exclusively for standard rigging for this reason. To stop the fuzzing I wax it before application. You would think this would prevent it from being wetted, but it doesn’t, it just stops the fuzz.
If the sag is too much you can coat the line with super glue and use something to press one end or the other against the mast or bulwarks, taking out the slack, until the line dris stiff. I use a dental tool to do this.
Last resort is to cut out the line and string a new one.
Hope one of these helps.

ParticipantNoel, wow thanks! That is a pretty nice compliment.
Jeff, thanks. The blocks were a last minute inspiration and I was surprised the idea turned out so well (and that I never thought of it before?) The backdrop is something I did back when I still had access to an 11×17 printer. I made several but in order to get them home in my travel bag, I had to fold them in half. So they all have this ugle crease in the center. I try to shoot to one side or the other to avoid “The Crease”! 😖

ParticipantHey I have one of those! I never thought about using it that way. Thanks for that. I use a vice I bought from MicroMart, I think it’s called a jeweler’s vice. It’s been worth its weight in gold. Yes all those things you mentioned are my mods.
I finally finished the ship tonight

ParticipantHi Jeff,
So I have been experimenting with jigs to make ratlines for the the Black Seas frigate. I came up with two jigs. The first one I made can produce the whole lower mast ratline set at one time. But this proved time consuming and difficult to thread
I used these for the lower masts.
The second jig I made is much simpler and faster to thread, but only does one ratline set at a time.
After mounting the ratlines I worked the rest of the standing rigging.
While doing so I discovered the predrilled holes for the formast, mainmast and mizzenmast stays are too far forward, just inside the aft end of the chains/channels so the stays don’t show behind the ratlines. I will be drilling new holes farther aft on the remaining ships.

Edit> I visited the blog. You have covered everything I mentioned except the crossbow machine. Unbelievably cool!

Shame about the galleons too. Have you seen the 1/600 Oak & Iron galleons Julian (Model J Ship) is doing? They are spectacular.

Awesome turnout Jeff. I like the way the sails look on Hermione. Did you have any difficulty fitting them after you had done the standing rigging? I have always rigged after putting sails on the 1/1200 models.

ParticipantJust awesome Jeff! Love the paint schemes.
The only thing I know to make those pesky cotton fibers lay down is to wax the thread before using it. I use beeswax, but candlewax works too. Just run the thead between your thumb and cake of wax several times quickly. Then once again between your thumb and forefinger to knock off any wax bits. Now it’s ready to go.
