Very nice! Are these all Langton 1/1200 hulls?

Wow Jeff! Awesome tutorial! Very impressive. I have been seeing some great builds of these 1/700 scale Warlord ships, but just haven’t convinced myself to make the jump from 1/1200 yet. You mentioned early on that you found a couple of ratline jigs somewhere, could you share those please? I made one a while back but would be interested in alternative ideas. You also mentioned your paper sails curling too much from the paint. Try painting them with PVA first, then shaping. Once the sails are completely dry, the paint won’t warp them. I really, really like what you have done and look forward to seeing the completed frigate!

Great looking ship Brian. I will be looking for the same issues with the resin hull I have. Thanks for pioneering the way for us.

I love it Brian! The paint scheme is perfect. I have a lot of ships but not this one. You’ve made her look so good I think I’ll have to contact Jeff at Waterloo Minis and see if he has one I can talk him out of.

I have the book also and have scoured it for color scheme details. Unfortunately there are none but the well known information on the Santisima Trinidad. The British fleet was all painted in the Nelson Checker at Trafalgar except perhaps for the smaller sloops & cutters.

    Jeff,

Having read both William James’s and Teddy’s books, I can say that I understand TR’s animosity to James. In every case where an American ship is involved James’s vitriolic opinion of the rebellious colonists comes through loud and clear. He depicts American sailors and officers as cowardly scum. Any American victory over the RN is excused by claims that the scum cheated or dishonorably struck and then fired, or was so over gunned that there could be no contest. But when discussing the French and Spanish, he affords the enemy his utmost respect. I came away with the ompression that TR was just trying to set the record straight.

    Cheers,

Yes very nice ships Brian. I just spent a good hour catching up on what you’ve been up to since the last time I entered your blog. Very entertaining my friend. Speaking to comments here about rigging, I am in full agreement with you. I could never go back to just standing rigging. Sometimes, like you, I think why am I going to this trouble? Like this last Spanish corvette I finished this morning. The Spanish method for rigging the Mizzen yards requires the brace lines to be fished down through all of the mainmast braces and secured to the lower mainmast. I unseated the starboard main ratline trying to get hold of one of the tails. Yrrrrrrrchhh! Then I realized I had a window to work with now and finished the rest. It was a bit fiddly fishing the new ratline into place, but it turned out OK.

OK, you guys put the raw meat out and fired up the laser pointer. But I decided to do crew for my Pyro 1/250 scale Brig of War first, to see how it went. Rather than go the expensive way and buy figures from Langton, I decided to try something different. A long while back I saw that Julian at Model J Ship was using Eduard laser printed Naval figures for his 1/1200 ships and dioramas. He makes them look really good. I ordered some. Unfortunately my results were not so good. They looked too flat, two dimensional, for my tastes. But they gave me an idea. What about card figures? If the card stock was doubled, at that scale they could have depth. So I searched Pinterest for crew figures and found what I wanted. I pasted them into a Word doc and sized each figure to 1/4″, then copied and pasted it again right next to the original. Then I flipped the 2nd image horizontal. I folded the images together to make a double thick, double sided figure. Then just touched up the sides with colored pens, added shirt stripes, hair color, etc. to those that needed it. More results can be seen on my blog at http://volsminiatures.blogspot.com/

Yes I was tempted and thought about it a lot before I did it on the first print out. But as you said, when I started handling it to finish the build, it was too flimsy, so I started over. Perhaps if I reinforced the rails with another layer it might work.

HaHaHa….Jeff I have had a big monster book fall on a beautiful Spanish SOL I had just finished rigging and flagging while I was taking photos to post. I had an almost finished brig cushion the blow when my large heavy magnifying lamp when it let loose in the middle of the night. Both ships looked like they had lost a serious battle. But to intentionally stomp on one?🤤 I’m afraid there may be some serious anger issues here!😠😂

I asked Jeff Knudsen that question. He said that he had played around with a couple of designs but stopped when he couldn’t come up with a good set of rules.

Thanks my friend! I decided on a clear base so you can see whatever mat pattern it’s on. It needed something to stabilize it. These card ships are so light that the slightest air movement would tip it over.

I must agree with Donald about Kent and Pope. I have read a few of their books and something is just missing. Yes O’Brien can be slow and there are books with almost no discernable action at all, but for flavor of the times and dialog, you can’t beat O’Brien. The Hornblower books are great for moving fast and quick reads. Lambdin and Russell mix the flavor of O’Brien and the action of Forester IMO.

Donald, Dewey Lambdin and S. Thomas Russell are both good and similar to O’Brien in style.
