Okay – I’ve hung on for ages not wanting to appear too dumb – but I don’t care any more. What the heck does ‘Granny Grating’ mean in this (or any other come to that) context?

It is slang for the plastic mesh you get that ‘grannies’ use for needlework.

Well that’s what I googled – but again what is the relevance to this context? Genuinely bemused now – I thought there might be another meaning that made some sense but I can’t get from needlework mesh to ancient wargaming. Failed codebreaking 101.
