Now in production, the newest edition of Medieval Warfare takes a look at prisoners of war during the Middle Ages. From the Viking slave trade to how English kings handled their captives during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, this issue explores the interesting confluence of economic, political, and punitive concerns that influenced medieval hostage taking and captivity.

Knyghte Pyke And Sworde

Okay, so I figured I’d do a bit of blatant promoting 🙂

I am going to give a complete PDF copy of our medieval rules Knyghte Pyke and Sworde to anyone who wants to give them a try and post it online.

Here’s the deal:

You get a complete copy of the rules. Read through them. Set up a game and then post about it wherever you normally post about games you play (this fine website, your blog, social media, something). Include your honest opinions. If you think it’s garbage, cool.

You’ll need some dark age or medieval armies that are based individually. Units are either 3 or 6 figures, so if you have Lion rampant armies, just use some of those cut in half.
Ancient figures should work fine as should generic LOTR style fantasy figures.

A typical game is 3-4 units and a couple of extra figures.

The book is 65 pages in total but the actual battle rules is about 20 pages of that. The rest is all the fancy stuff.

The game can be solo, with a mate, at the club, whatever you usually do. You don’t have to do an in-depth analysis of it (unless you like doing that sort of thing) and you don’t have to do a comparison review to other rules (unless you like doing that sort of thing).
Just play it, post an AAR or whatever you normally do for your games.

Sound good?

If so, let me know. You can E-MAIL and I’ll hook you up.

The 2020 special edition of Medieval Warfare is a compilation of covers, battle scenes and unit reconstructions from the first fifty issues of the magazine. Compiled and edited by Peter Konieczny, with contributions from the rest of the Medieval Warfare staff, this 100-page full-colour book features artwork by favourite illustrators such as Jose Cabrera-Pena, Darren Tan, Rocio Espin, and Zvonimir Grbasic to name but a few. Also included are articles by the staff with insight into our philosophy for commissioning artwork, and a "behind-the-scenes" look at how illustrations are produced.

Now at the printers, issue X-3 of Medieval Warfare has a special theme focused around the 937 Battle of Brunanburh. The exact location of this bloody conflict has been a mystery for centuries. Now expert Michael Livingston re-evaluates the evidence, and readers are given a first look at the exciting work coming out of an archaeological site that may in fact be the legendary lost battlefield.

Pre-order your copy today to save slightly on the cover price, or subscribe to keep getting future copies of Medieval Warfare.
Please note that due to the ripple effects of Covid-19 in the US and Canada, issue X-3 will NOT be appearing in many retail locations. Please check our shop locator for current availability.
