On 25 July 1812, Murat contacted Osterman-Tolstoy in the vicinity of Ostrovno. Tolstoy setup a rear guard position in a heavy wood outside the village. Eventually, Eugene's lead division arrived on the field, outflanking the Russians, and necessitating their withdrawal east toward Vitebsk.
