Recently I went to the Royal Signals Museums as part of a visit to Blandford Camp for work. It’s well worth a visit, if you’re ever down in Dorset, but if you can’t make it, I have posted some pictures of the trip on my blog:

    Thanks for that!

I could have sworn there used to be a horse (stuffed, exhibit for the use of) galloping through one of the halls, laying cable in WWI, very impressive it was – maybe I dreamed it?

I suspect they’ve just replaced it in the last thirty years!

Any Batco, Pam 2 on display yet?

Thanks Guy. There was a horse, stuffed, but it wasn’t galloping, unfortunately.

I am not sure what Batco is, but having has a quick look at ARS, I guess it’s a computer program/system? There was a set up from Basra with a load of computers, so maybe that was it?

    Computerised! Ah if only!

Battle Code – from the 80s (and 90s) – a paper based encryption ‘system’  – I presumed it was obsolete with the arrival of Bowman and demise of Clansman – it would be fun to let kids try and encode/decode a simple message with it (maybe the little beggars could make the wallet and slide work).

Pam 2 was voice procedure – Beadwindow, Beadwindow, Beadwindow!

Every day is a schoolday! I can’t say I saw either specifically, but I did also miss some of the museum as we had to get back north. I take it you were signals?

I remember BATCO and SLIDEX what fun they were!  Despite them I passed my RSO course.

I could only aspire to such dizzy heights – no, but I did a familiarisation course at Blandford. As part of it, I can remember directing a Ptarmigan Bedford lorry on a particular route to set up a link and the sergeant, gently coughing as I did so. Realising he probably didn’t need to go suck on a Zube, I had another squint at the map and realised I had directed us over bridge in the centre of Blandford Forum that would only take half our weight. Quick reroute.

The depressing thing was he knew I was going to do it too.

Thank you for sharing!  I am ex- US Army Signal Corps.  I gave a talk at my wife’s school and none of the kids knew what a Troposcatter radio was, what are they teaching kids these days???

Seriously it looks like a great museum.
