I am about to start painting a small 15mm sci fi alien force, half of which will be wearing Power Armour (Im using the older GZG kra’vak minis), however im completely stuck for ideas with regards to a colour scheme, I’ve used olive green/brown, Grey and blue on my other factions so they are out of the equation. Whatever is chosen needs to be simple and quick, any suggestions?

Depends on their role I reckon, and tech levels.

My RDF for example are a kind of UN style peacekeeper force, they don’t wear camo, they have a mid grey colour for their vehicles and kit.
It makes them a very visible presence which can help deter the bad guys and helps reassure the local populace.

they will be a high tech – elite strike force, the aliens themselves will have a light blue skin tone, so I don’t mind not having regular camo style

Well, what’s their species like? Is nighttime a big deal for them, like it is for humans? That’s why so many special forces wear black in the real world – movement by night, even if it’s only suggested, is very intimidating. For them there might be some other suggestion they’re trying to make with their colors. Red and blue have their own connotations, for example. Or maybe they want to stand out, like poisonous insects, to say “don’t screw with us – we’re so dangerous we don’t have to hide.”

For an effective digicam/MTP effect, use a sponge and apply blotches of dark brown, pale green and black over a dark green base.  Each new layer should be applied more lightly than the previous one.  Pick out weapons in black, visors in yellow or blue and bare faces in flesh tones.  Wash the whole with a dark brown wash.  Quick and surprisingly good-looking.  I’ll try to post an example later.

Ive not really given much thought to their background other than advanced tech and warlike, the PA suits they wear are ridged so will pick up a dry brushing effect really well so im looking more for a suggestion on colours rather than anything else. Im imaging camo is redundant to this species as theyre macho bad -asses – think GW terminators, plus it means I don’t have to paint anymore(though I have tried the sponge technique mentioned by Robey to goof effect), I think im looking for something vivid and not the usual military drabs, but am a little wary of ending up with a unit of clowns

Buy some high gloss red and use that.

    Proper shiny red.

    Black guns.

In the dusty recesses of my mind, is the vague recollection of an SF story where the bad aliens either had monochromatic vision or were effectively blind. With no need for visual cammo, the Earth suits were brightly painted according to rank and function – kinda like blaze orange hunting gear.

I went with red in the end, with light blue skin on the visible parts, and bone coloured guns and equipment, they look ok I will post some pics when theyre based
