I wonder how the Coalition’s increasing reliance on snipers/marksmen for over-watch fire has inflated the engagement range envelope? While many sniper engagements happen between 600 and 750 m distance a significant number occur at over 1000 m range. Could this greater reliance on snipers/marksmen (if it exists) be skewing the numbers up significantly?

Imunderstand that the Taliban have only a moderate proficiency with long-range sniping but foreign fighters such as Arabs and Chechens have apparently demonstrated greater skill at long-range sniping. Could these elongated engagement ranges be a partial function of a growing role for sniping as well as long-range use of heavier infantry weapons such as more powerful small arms, MG’s and auto-cannons?
