One of the games played at this month’s meeting of the Devon Wargames Group was a clash on the Limes Germanicus as a Roman punitive column got more than it bargained for in the German forest, using Clash of Spears.

This set of rules was new to most of us, including me, but we managed to play using forces of over 2,000 points a side with six players and if you would like to know more then just follow the link to the club blog.

I’ve always enjoyed playing Clash of Spears.  The rules do give one a lot of rope to hang yourself.  I remember the first time playing, I pushed my Numidian horse too fast and hard, and ended up in the middle of a bunch of Romans, exhausted with blown horses.

It takes a bit to learn how far, and when to push your troops.  And how to allocate your command pips.  Great set of rules that I should play more often.

Although you certainly went big your first game – multiplayer with a lot of figures.  Looked like a spectacular game.

    Hi Tony,

As a novice to the rules, your comments echo my thoughts in the post as to the kind of player decision points the rules are designed to generate and I got a sense of that in the few combats I played through.

As regards multiplayer potential, I felt they stood the test very well and our game rattled along at a good pace, despite many of us around the table  getting our heads around the play with them for the first time.

    Cheers
