The 94e Regiment de Ligne could trace its origins back to 1709 and the raising of the Royal Regiment Baverie, the last regiment raised during the reign of Louis the XIV.
By the time the unit would enter the Peninsular War it was a veteran regiment with honours including Austerlitz, Jena and Freidland.
