Been a while since I ran one but have run plenty in my time.

I’d say there were several reasons for putting on any of the games which included some or all of:

– promoting a period
– promoting a game system
– providing entertainment for those coming to the show to encourage people to come back next year
– providing something for non-wargaming children/ spouses/ friends/ minders to watch/ join in with while the wargamer(s) in their lives increased the size of their lead mountain!
– promoting the hobby to the wider world (many years ago I managed to get on the BBC Radio 4 morning news talking about a game we were putting on at Claymore)
– giving me an excuse to talk to anyone passing by (like I need an excuse! 😀 )

Well, slow progress to be sure but completed a little scenic item just to keep the project moving.

It’s a camp for the (yet to be painted) Amorites (MAR.TU or Ammurru).

A Perfect Six child herds Perfect Six sheep with the aid of an Onslaught Miniatures mercenary warhound, watched by a Baccus Amazon archer (minus her bow) in front of scratch built tents and a pair of storage jars made from glow in the dark fishing lures!

By comparison Wardaddy and the crew of “Fury” are wusses 🙂

“This Citation was awarded to Audie Murphy for “Conspicuous Gallantry and Intrepidity Involving Risk of Life Above and Beyond the Call of Duty In Action With the Enemy”, 26 January 1945. The citation reads:
2d Lt. Murphy commanded Company B, which was attacked by 6 tanks and waves of infantry. 2d Lt. Murphy ordered his men to withdraw to prepared positions in a woods, while he remained forward at his command post and continued to give fire directions to the artillery by telephone. Behind him, to his right, 1 of our tank destroyers received a direct hit and began to burn. Its crew withdrew to the woods. 2d Lt. Murphy continued to direct artillery fire which killed large numbers of the advancing enemy infantry. With the enemy tanks abreast of his position, 2d Lt. Murphy climbed on the burning tank destroyer, which was in danger of blowing up at any moment, and employed its .50 caliber machine gun against the enemy. He was alone and exposed to German fire from 3 sides, but his deadly fire killed dozens of Germans and caused their infantry attack to waver. The enemy tanks, losing infantry support, began to fall back. For an hour the Germans tried every available weapon to eliminate 2d Lt. Murphy, but he continued to hold his position and wiped out a squad which was trying to creep up unnoticed on his right flank. Germans reached as close as 10 yards, only to be mowed down by his fire. He received a leg wound, but ignored it and continued the single-handed fight until his ammunition was exhausted. He then made his way to his company, refused medical attention, and organized the company in a counterattack which forced the Germans to withdraw. His directing of artillery fire wiped out many of the enemy; he killed or wounded about 50. 2d Lt. Murphy’s indomitable courage and his refusal to give an inch of ground saved his company from possible encirclement and destruction, and enabled it to hold the woods which had been the enemy’s objective.”

Who’d believe that as the climax of a film?

Starting point is – do they produce/ stock something I want? If not then all the customer service and great prices in the world won’t get me to buy from them.

But if they do, then a combination of quality, ease of acquiring them, customer service, price and breadth of range come in to play. It’s often a trade off, akin to speed/ armour/ guns for tanks or battleships!

Mainly I use Pendraken, Baccus, Rapier and Tumbling Dice for my current gaming interests.

Would the Brigade Models 6mm scale Kirin walkers do? I got a pack of 6 with mixed weaponry at this year’s “Joy of Six” show. Really nice little models.

It seems the worse my eyesight and hand/eye coordination get, the smaller the scale of the figures I am happy to paint!!

On 28mm I not only paint the eyeball but highlight it too. My 6mm Epic 40K marines have tac markings and chapter symbols on their shoulder pads.

… there may be a reason I’m getting through my lead mountain so slowly 🙂

What do I want from a rule set?

I prefer the right result for the wrong reason to the wrong result for the right reason.

I like top down rather than bottom up.

I like enough luck that I lose because I’m unlucky and enough skill that I win because I’m brilliant.

If they can also accommodate multiple players a side so I can lose because my comrades let me down that’s good too.

Mainly I want everyone playing to have a good time, even if they lost. Actually, particularly if they lost!

Equally likely to appear: Hen’s teeth 🙂

To Do List: Make any sort of dent in the lead mountain!

Fantasy – Warmaster

Ancients – Warmaster Ancients and occasionally beta testing of my own home grown “King of Kish” rules for Bronze Age Mesopotamia

Armada Period Naval – “La Flota” – another home grown set and also still very much in beta!

Wild West – Legends of the Old West

Napoleonic – Polemos: Marechal De L’Empire

WW2 Battle – Blitzkreig Commander

WW2 Skirmish – Chain Of Command

WW2 Naval – Battlefleet Gothic (Not my choice, I’d prefer GQ2, but it works surprisingly well!)

Guess I should have posted here before posting my Sumerian stuff!

Elsewhere I’m Ithoriel so you may recognise me as that from other forums.

As to interests, 1/3000th to 54mm scale land, sea, air and space, dinosaurs to death stars about covers it in a nutshell.

Been gaming since the 1960’s and have a lead mountain so big my kids have threatened to have me buried with my armies arrayed around me like the Chin Emperor 🙂

TWW is already one of my “must read” wargames sites.

Thanks, folks, for the kind comments.

The modular approach to the city is so I can do larger or smaller settlements. The four corner modules can be combined to create a large fort, for example.

I already have one more centre section so just need a couple of wall sections to expand the thing. At the moment swapping the centre module makes it a different city.

There are various “under construction” pics in the Photobucket folder showing how the wall sections in particular were created.

Next up for city building is a harbour area, or possibly a trade outpost.

As to the ship, I like it but I’m not sure it’s very Sumerian! At least the crew are paddling, not rowing like the crew of the flagship I’ve made. There are pictures of the flagship and some reed transports on the Photobucket site too.

The water effect is just flexible filler, shaped with a steel sculpting tool, painted dark blue, heavily drybrushed with a lighter blue, lightly drybrushed with turquoise and finally the wave crests picked out in white, matt varnish for the whole thing then a coat of gloss varnish for copper helmets, bronze spear points and the water. Takes longer to describe than the water did to paint.

“in the vicinity of Aerle-Maerle (I can’t find anywhere corresponding to these names but I imagine it’s in the Netherlands).” – John D Salt

They are cities near Gorp in Noord-Brabant, Netherlands, if that helps.

Personally I’d look to the likes of Chain of Command to play out games based on this sort of thing.

For games at the level of BKC, for example, I’d expect this level of stuff to be worked out abstractly, factored into special abilities or die rolls.

Great show with lots to see and do.

Better catering than most shows too!

Won a bottle of Glenfiddich in the raffle which you enter by playing the participation games which can’t be bad!

The visit to the Baccus workshop on the Saturday was fascinating.

Hats off to Peter and to the guys from WArgames Emporium for a brilliant show.

Already saving for next year 🙂

Would love to see 6mm Undead though I realise the spindly nature of skellies might make 6mm a nightmare to cast.
