I started gaming with figures using Tunnels & Trolls (that dates me then) before D&D came out. Then moved onto “historical” ancients, WW2 6mm and 1:3000 naval. Since then its been 15mm AWI, Zulu War, Sci-fi, AK47; 6mm Modern (80s), Napoleonic, WW2 (second time around); 20mm WW2, VBCW; 25/28mm Napoleonic, more Ancients and Dark Age; now 15mm Sci-fi (second time around). There has been a number of forays into other periods/scales along the way.

I have no problem with fantasy at all, even “Historical” is a fantasy as even refighting an actual battle is make believe. Can the sources be totally trusted given that the winner writes the history books?

What does hack me off are rules that promote/dictate that only the companies own products can be used to play them, competition or not!

There are some gems in Warriors ranges, the old Viking (mostly the Vikings) and Castile Miniatures (medieval) ranges are in the “Crusades” range. They also have the old Gallia ECW and Colonial ranges. Some of their newer ancients figures are very good, though not a lot of figure variants, along with the newer figures/ranges. Some of the ranges date back to the late 70s, early 80s (Elizabethans spring to mind).

Like a few manufacturers sites, they could do with more photos of their wares. Big pluses are the prices and they are great to deal with and very helpful. Delivery is very fast too.

Must still make it. Some even drink it by choice

The buildings are all OO railway ones, mainly card. I’ve got even more now! Just call me “Rachman”.

I like my terrain to look “realistic” but sometimes the compromise between realism and playability is hard to achieve. A couple of photos of my VBCW 20mm (OO gauge fits nicely despite not being exact ). 28mm Dark Age its a case of getting the terrain to look right and forget the ground scale.

A very early VBCW game. The factory represents Jacobs (cream crackers) in Liverpool.

The start of a game, not much on the table yet.

A lot more populated now. The buildings look great but can be nudged/damaged by players when leaning over to move units near the centre of the table. The price you pay………..

It was a great show, very good review too. More people there than I remember for a few years. Most of the traders seemed busy too.

Some terrific games and great scenery, the temple in the mountain, with a cut out interior around the back was great. A lot of work there by someone.

Irregular Miniatures do some casualties in their siege range but they’re not quite Pictish. However, the old range of Irregular figures had a “Pictish” casualty, beard and mostly covered with a cloak which painted up very nicely. If you email Ian kay at Irregular he maybe able to cast some for you from the old range.

    They look good.

Just starting 6mm sci-fi myself. I intend to use Iron Cow 2103AD rules, they seem straightforward and look like they’ll give a quick game. Lots of great buildings and vehicles etc around now.

    Great photos JP.

Cracking terrain, the “proper” hills do make a great difference. They look a lot better than contours.

    Thanks for posting.

    Your camo works very well………..

I’d suggest dry brushing, almost dusting….., with a lighter colour maybe an off white with a soft brush. Very light coats, trial and error until you see how much you need. That should bring out the detail and make it recognisable again.

    Graham,

I am tempted by your figures but apart from anything else would never get two armies painted! They are terrific figures and would be my first choice in 28mm.

    Thanks chaps for your assistance.

I’ll see about getting a copy of Raise The Clans and see what they’re like. I did have a copy of the relevant WRG set but can’t remember if I’ve still got them. The other option is adapt a set or write some of my own….

    kid bananas,

    The Carden-Loyd tankettes are from Early War Miniatures (20mm scale);

    http://earlywarminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=289_295&products_id=1901

I think I cut down some of their artillery men to go in as crew.

    The Carden-Loyd One Mand tank is from Geisbers (Black Lion Decals, in Holland) in 1/76th;

    http://www.blacklionshop.nl/en/category/giesbers-models/page/3/

3rd item down. I used cut down SHQ figures to crew them. You get 2 hulls and optional parts to mark 2 of the 3 or 4 marks.

    Hope that helps.

I use carpet tiles, I have green and a sand colour. Its just a case of swopping them over depending on the game. You do have to have two sets of hills but thats no great challenge, I use cork tiles topped off with the relevant colour to make contoured hills. One thing I think you do need is a lip around the edge of the table to keep them in place.

If we play a classical battle, we have the classical terrain but as we don’t often fight classical battles we use terrain that looks good and is a bit more interesting. Its not a case of testing gamers memories or interpretation of a rule set or looking for some kind of wonderful revelation, we game for the fun and enjoyment we get out of the game. We all like to win, or be on the winning side, but its not the be all and end all of why we play.

Chess is an interesting game but doesn’t have the visual effect of a table full of figure, which is why I wargame rather than play chess every week.

It depends on where in the world your battle is set and also the period as to how much terrain is right, as well as personal preference.

I didn’t realise it was so dangerous to stray from the recommended sparse terrain, the thought had never occurred to me. I layout terrain that I am happy with, I certainly don’t need to justify it to anyone. Symmetrical terrain is just so false, can’t think of any battles, classical or otherwise with symmetrical terrain.

Note; The “we” referred to above are the local gamers that play regularly together for fun over a few bottles of beer. Only one ever takes part in competition gaming.

I tend to have more terrain than the various rule sets advise. I think it looks better and its also more of a test of the gamers generalship, which can make it fun. 🙂

Started of with Legion, by Al Margolis I think, then WRG 5th and 6th, Armarti plus glanced at others along the way. Can’t stand DBA! Finally came across Dux Bellorum before it came out, it gives a great game plus you can you single bases a la DBA or larger multi base units which look miles better. We’ve adapted it for Greeks and Persians and had a good refight of Platea.

Dux Bellorum using 12cm frontages and usually 2 ranks (large units). We’ve had battles using over 100 pts and they play well, also give a fun game.

Quick to pick up with some “fun” elements; mead, priests, challenge (general/champions duel). Definitely recommended.
