i remember being told about a wargame, that you just needed to say three reasons why something should happen, it went to and frow, and the winner  of the argument was who could think the 3 reasons up more than the oponant. the game went in turns until victory.

so the game was a historical discussion, kinda. it rewarded how well you knew about the battle, and had no movement rules or dice, or terrain effects, instead it was all argued out 3 reasons at a time. i think the concept was realy interesting.

we are thinking of 3D printing as we know it, but if we get a method so cheap! you can print as many figs as you want, and then print more after a while, then it would be good. I just bought a milk tray box of chocks, and it had plastic shells inside that could be painted and used as sci fi buildings, so it got me thinking that we dont need solid figs, if you can 3D print coloured shells of figs, it would be cheap and fast and you could print as many as you want over and over. just an idea thinking outside the box.

3D figs are kinda hollow now, but if you dont want a solid fig it may be good to just have a shell,

the quality may not need to be as good either, just a quick army represention shell in colour would be ok, if your just wanting to recreate a battle, if you want a model rather than a game then then get more detailed models as usual

they planned on taking an aliminium 3d printer to mars, then mine the metal, and make habitats and return rockets. is that cool 🙂

i dont like resin, because of the scafolding supports, I had a 3d printer, and never had to use scafolding, but if you have one then you will know better, but cool prints

also if anybody else is thinking of sculpting, you can use a modeling app, and cut pieces from other models, then splice them, really cutting down workload, its a learning curve but once you know how its just a bit fidily to splice

what will really blow your mind is, you can paint any 3d model, so all the tanks etc… already made can be painted.

i was looking at at 16 colour 3d printer on amazon , it was £2000, then i looked on ebay and found armies for 700 and 1500, so if you printed two or three armies you would break even, you could sell them or keep, and then the printer would be making money.

i think zbrush used to paint a 3d model, it was pretty easy, just like 2d painting,

Im sure 5 figs repeated 1000 times would make money.

    roll on soon 🙂

stack em high, sell low, I think will win, as an RPG fig you would only buy one fig,and its custom made per fig but historical you may buy a 1000 from 5 designs that would already be available from perviose army prints

If i was a 3D print company, I would also print on bases that are for a set of rules. or generic bases,

ALSO !  you can buy your own 3Dprinter, and print your own models, you can use a free model app like blender, Im not sure how to paint them prob in an app, but 3Dprinting isnt that expensive considering every army you want is yours, Im sure your freinds would buy armies from you

My experience in 3D printing, is small items like figs are quick and easy to print, dont buy one of those liquid printers, get the spools version,

These are z-scale (which is about 8mm in wargaming terms) and cost over £2 a figure. Hardly much of a threat to ‘pro’ painters. I suppose the technology is in its early stages but how many small producers are likely to take the risk of buying high cost equipment if they need to charge that kind of money ?

there are many bussiness models, eg a company can rent, or commission a bigger company to print etc…  and you only need to make a 5 man box and then sell 50 boxes as an army

Next week, Noch wil be releasing coloured 3D printed figures. They are astonishingly good (1/220 scale….): https://www.noch.com/construction-workers/44501/ The technology to print in colour is already there. As a professional figure painter myself, I’m hoping it will take a while to come to miniature wargaming: https://t.co/ck3Pvts7dM

wow I now want to wargame a building site, but they do look good. as you are an artest maybe you could digitaly paint , i know its not the same but painting uniforms etc may be satifying

fragility dosnt matter if you can just keep printing them

Interesting, still not 100% sure how it works. It mixes various resins to get the colour? If so, does that mean the resin vat is constantly drained, cleaned and refilled when it prints a new colour?

your thinking of liquid 3D printing maybe, the printer i had had a spool of coloured wire that melts as its applied, the multicoloured has many diff coloured spools, and they put coloured plastic on areas, but the model when its designed has to include colour info with it.

in fact it is possible now, the sprue are made to encompass a full model and all its bits, but what if we do a model ford conveyer on a sprue by making sprues of a single piece in a colour, and another sprue of a second piece of a diferrent colour and so on, you may need 10 sprues to make a single model, but you could have 30 figs of one kind on thoses 10 sprues in diff colours. i think this is why the epic warlord ACW figs are good, but they need to do more colored sprues for a better effect, they just did the stand green and blue and grey, but what if the blue and grey were chopped in half and you had the leys a slightly diff blue and grey

An acquaintance of mine (not a producer or professional painter of wargame figures) suggested recently that he believed computing (more his field) and robotics would allow cheap machine painting of figures to be a realistic proposition within a short time if someone put sufficient money and energy into development. He believes most of the tech exists and just needs to be fused for this purpose. I wonder if that is not a more viable solution to your problem than 3d printing? (good luck with Aurore using pre coloured filaments!)

i would love timpo swappets at 20mm …..

just saying, if there going to 3D print, why dont they do multicolour

PLA/FDM is not much cop for wargames models, resin is what you want to use and that is single colour.

if there not much cop, print some more when they break 🙂

playing with unpainted models is a good idea. but I want to be able to buy a coloured set of models cheap, instead of employing an artist or waiting for post that are not companies. there should be a path to do the hobby from a shop.

I have a 3D printed model that has 4 colours, I looked into it and there are multicoloured 3D printers, now you could 3D print some good stuff with 4 colours if the models were made to use the 4 colours, I think this is a good idea for a business, im sure lots of wargamers would like a coloured army new, and terrain etc… the problem is the model creator has to support the 4 colours.

I enjoy the hobby as is, but would love vast choice of coloured items.

I think rules are made as a base for interaction with others, so we are all doing one thing. its for multiplayer that rules exist. if you were playing a game you would study a battle and make your rules as an original to what your trying to create. its only when you want to share it becomes like a ruleset. if eg you land a transport in normandy in ww2, a ruleset will give you a procedure, but you may have your own method eg roll when exiting, roll to crawl, roll for cover, roll to move, a ruleset is just so you can pplay others, nothing beats your own recreation of a battle scenario, but you def get ideas from rules to then create your own

I am using the airfix battles cards , and I am going to substitute units in other historical times, like shooting a rifle will be a sword attack but range would be zero, horses as tanks, I really love the cards for play as im going solo, i think you have to find what works,

ok just getting setup for a ww2 skirmish, I am useing airfix battles force cards as a modded system to battle with, I am assigning a number of units to one card so the visuals look better. I am creating plastic numbered chits myself so i can have hundreds of units in a battle.
