    Cheers every one,

Deephorse it is indeed Morses Jag, but it will be used mostly for the bad guys who permanently seemed to drive them in the Sweeney.

Not Connard Sage, all the figures are Crooked Dice, vehicles Vanguards, buildings Purple Bob’s.

Sadly I am the Prog Rock Dad you speak of !

Many thanks, interestingly on the numbers at Montgisard there were 400 ish knights and if I remember right less than 100 from The Templars suggesting 300 or so from the Kingdom, plus the 4 to 7,000 other troops all if whom seem to be from or raised by the Kingdom.

    Hi all, cheers.

No big plans with it as yet, just played one game after having it for about 3 years, really enjoyed the way 7tv played. I’m rewatching the show again at the moment, the sets are very late 70s but it’s what I grew up with. I’m really enjoying it as are the family. The Avon, Villa relationship is superb, I quite like the acting to be honest, very honest.

Cheers but have to I disagree regarding the blue. The above are painted using the Official colours which I tend to do with the earlier stuff but use various colours mostly shades of Blue Grey for later stuff till the end of the Scheme in late 41. There is no doubt that poor local suppliers and the harsh desert conditions changed the colours over time.

Interestingly I have been looking out for colour (not colourised) pictures of Caunter and the vast majority are not the original colours, I’ve seen the silver grey sections of the scheme all the way from Duck Egg Blue through to a mid green blue. Veterans of the period distinctly remember the “awful” blue colour too so it can’t be dismissed.

    Many thanks everyone,

Hi, Whirlwind the “weapon” is a Chauchat Machine Gun, a little early for active duty as they only came into production in Dec 15, we just used it as a rifleman in the game.

Btw the soldier is Hindu rather than Sikh. There were loads of different types of turbans in use, however Sikh turbans tend to have a flat top whilst Hindu and Muslim units have a pointed top.

If you put ww1 turban styles into Google it will bring up a picture of 16 different styles.

Lined up I have “Hell Broke Loose” which is the Italian Wars version of Piquet, which I have played once but enjoyed quite a bit. Furisio a set I got on line, they are period specific, look pretty good but might be a bit “dicey” for me. Final option and most likely is me updating the classic Gush rules.

No problems Donald, always open to a reasonable debate. It’s a good point regarding the Italian troops in the desert (another YG favourite), there are two ways to look at how I have done the NC tables, they can be either be used religiously as they are printed (which is not my intention) or they can be used as a guide on which to start, subsequently adding new stats for Veteran Line Battalions etc.

There are so many different ways to try and reflect troop performance and you are correct in saying that Command and Control had a massive effect, along with tactics, NC is one way of attempting to recreate that.

    Many Thanks

    Hi guys,

I really didn’t want it to get fraught either, I had tried to explain in the initial post that it was about how to use NC and not a debate for or against them.

My comments or playtest request was in relation to using the factors in a game and how they work rather than an attempt to open a debate about if you should use them at all. I didn’t want the anti NC brigade to hijack a thread for us NC users.

I felt that Ian had simply reacted to what he thought my post said without reading it. The factors don’t “Kill the Prussians” there is little difference to the combat factors between comparable troop types, Grenadiers are the same, Prussian Guard are the same as French Middle Guards, I could go on. I was annoyed by his dismissive stance, a fair amount of work went into this, apologies.

The NC tables, as they were with Quarrie are a guide, you can change factors up or down based on performance or personal preference. That’s were the debate lies.

Viva La National Characteristics, Viva La Difference !

Hi Ian, thanks for the input.

I take it you didn’t bother to read the intro then. I outlined why and that it was based on nostalgia rather than historical accuracy and if you didn’t like NC the post wasnt for you. So why spend the time coming on here to have a go at me and my light hearted bit of nostalgia.

For the record I don’t think GdeB is too complicated at all, it’s fairly straight forward, if you read the post adding in NC actually removes a greater number of factors than it aฤds. I think they were the best parts of 70s gaming, I am not a fan of bucket o’dice rules or the one set of rules for the whole of warfare aka BP, so why not enjoy what I enjoy ?

How exactly does it kill off the Prussian Army ? Very little difference between them and the French.

    Thanks everyone,

Paskal, any queries regarding the uniform should be directed at Fireforge Games who made the figures. Is it not a matter of passing time ? Sergeants in the 1st Crusade would be different to those in the later Crusades, Fireforge figures are designed for that later period.

As for the colours of the Lazarus, what is your source for that ? I have references to both Black/Green and White/Green, I also have a reasonably contemporary picture of a Knight of St Lazarus in White / Green. I find it very difficult to believe that the Order would have no cross insignia in a time where religious devotion was paramount. Removing the right to wear the cross would be a punishment, caring for those with Leprosy was a religious calling.

People entered the Order not only from other Orders on contraction of Leprosy but also from none Order Crusaders when they fell ill. Others without the disease would join with the vocation to care for those suffering.

I clearly state in the blog post that the “uniform” is pure speculation based on the black/red of the Templar Sergeants.

The Knights of St Lazarus are very real, in fact they are still around today as the Order of St Lazarus. If you are interested click on the link in the Sergeants post back to the Post I did on the Knights and there is more information as well as details about the book “Leper Knights” which mostly covers the order in England but does have a couple chapters (no pun intended) on the Order in the Holy Land.

Cheers Dave, it’s good to have your thoughts on this.

Our little group have been Navaling for 30 years or so and we have all been surprised by how well S & G have performed in this Campaign, I have gone back and checked all the data I used for the ships and largely they are correct. Our British guns are under performing slightly but that was mostly due to the volume of information avaliable when I sorted the British ships out last 25 years or so ago. We are relatively new to the German Fleet, only really looking into them in detail in last year’s Baltic Campaign and this years Op Berlin Campaign so their data is as fresh as a daisy. I was surprised at the comparable penetration values with the 11″ German guns and the 15″ British ones.

Whilst I take on board your ROF point, even on a 1 shell at a time the 18 guns of S and G is three times the 6 of Renown, the British were very lucky that day.

They did suffer as in the Renown encounter with some bad luck and the loss of Scharnhorst at North Cape can largely IMO be put down to her radar being put out of action with almost the first salvos, leaving her almost blind in poor weather.

There are compromises with any set of rules and I try to make our games as realistic as I can without turning them into a stats fest, a few in our group are not hard core Naval and want a good game at the end of the day, but luck as I mentioned in my post above is such a massive factor in Naval Warfare and especially in Naval gaming. You can straddle a ship 10 times and get no hits of note whilst your opponent can get a lucky hit and take your fire control out or explode your magazine.

That to me is the joy of Naval Wargaming, the variability, we have played The Run to the South many times and sometimes the British Battlecruisers don’t blow up, it’s not because the rules are wrong its because on that day the Germans didn’t hit the right spot.

Regards the shell count it’s a negative I’m afraid. I play Campaigns now as a series of linked Scenarios rather than tracking fuel usage etc, I tried the full detail, plot every search pattern Campaign and people just get bored and the Campaign dies. Having individual scenarios the consequences of which effect the following games is far better method and all our players really enjoy it.

    Hi Dave,

Rules are my own, well into their third decade so I have some degree of confidence in them.

I would be reluctant to draw any conclusions from the Renown encounter, it was in the dark in a snow storm. Luck plays a tremendous part in any Naval Battle as I am sure you know. Yes you can skilfully place your salvo to straddle the target but in doing so you can’t aim to say take out a turret, your shell’s land where they land. After a number of largely ineffective salvos Renown took out the Fire Control of the Gneisenau forcing Scharnhorst to make smoke and cover her sister, then Scharnhorsts radar failed. In those conditions with that luck Renown saw off both ships, on a Clear calm sea I think it would be a very different result.

    Renown 6 x 15″ guns ROF 2 per minute, 12 shells a minute

Scharnhorst and Gneisenau 18 x 11.1″ guns ROF 3.5 per minute, 63 shells

Now I know ROF isn’t everything but that’s a massive difference.

Added to that although there is a big disparity in shell weight, the more modern German Gun has a much greater range (even with the mid war trajectory improvement on Renown) and comparable penetration (around 290mm at 20,000 yards).

Renown has true Battlecruiser armour, 9in belt and turrets after the inter war upgrade, depending on sources Scharnhorst has roughly 14in belt and turret armour so there must be a big old sweet spot in ideal conditions where Renown is in big trouble.

Now in our refight, Barham was stuck two on one at a relatively close range, in our game luck (in the guise of dice rolls) meant that Barham lost the use of three of her turrets in quick succession, she could have taken three relatively harmless deck or superstructure hits and it would have been a very different. Renown and Repulse were at their maximum range so they could only use front guns at long range and had relatively little effect.

    So that’s my reasoning.
