Hi,

There were images when I uploaded the post. I transfered the text in as usual and then put the pictures in by using the picture icon, which brings up the box to put the source of the image. I paste that in, usually it’s from my blog.

Press enter and this program turns the text into the image. It’s the same way I’ve done it for years without a problem 👍

    Regards Ken

One things for sure I will never do this again ! I didn’t put the Hull cutting on the video because if I had half a brain I would have bought a waterline model in the first place 😆

I cut it by eye using a Stanley Knife in a very agricultural way, it might have got an X rating if it was on film, especially with the swearing 👍

Safe to say I double, then triple check anything I buy is waterline now.

Hi Gary, they are cms so the ship is 42 cms by 10 cms.

I’ll try and remember a scale next time but my brain can be a bit of a sieve, if you have a couple of spare mins pop over to the Yarkshire Gamer Utubes Channel and watch one of the short build videos, that has loads of stuff to scale against.

Cheers everyone, plenty to talk about and discuss.

Guy, the Little Wars comment is a joke, I think what they do is brilliant but if you boil the question down to its basics, the hobby is greying and the Old Guard are thinning out and if we don’t bring in new people to the hobby the last of us will be stood in a small square at our own Waterloo.

I was very pleased with the many positive responses to the question posed, it was great to hear, but I think I did a fair summary of the question as you did of the answers 👍

Hey Ken! The end of year Spotify listening report just came out. It’s a fun little snapshot into a user’s listening habits and other interesting data. Besides listing the music I most listen to (Porcupine Tree, Devin Townsend and Klone) it also listed the podcasts I most listen to while painting. Well, Spotify probably doesn’t know I paint small lead figures while streaming podcasts, but that’s what I do. Anyways, guess who’s podcast was listed as my most listened to? You’re well on your way to multimedia stardom!

Thanks very much Tony, that’s great to hear. I was chatting to a lad at Recon today who really loves the Podcast too. It’s so nice to hear, making them is quite a solitary process and I press the button and out they go onto the Internet so it’s comments like this that let me know I’m doing alright 👍.

That and Porcupine Tree are awesome !

    Hi,

I don’t believe that there is a problem with the colours or pattern, these are the colours for these ships that I have and I have used the Lifecolor Sets so any problem is theirs. I think they are correct.

No that’s not how the shell splash was made, I am doing a tutorial on them now which should be out in a week or so.

Wonderful work. I’ve always wondered what the right color is for the blast bags on RN ships? I’ve seen white, light gray and dark gray.

It all depends to be fair, you will find pictures of Hood with light gray blast bags but this is specifically for her final voyage, I highly recommend the HMS Hood Association website for their help with colours.

    Cheers Admiral Hawke,

I am currently working on a tutorial for the shell splashes, the one in the picture was the first one I did and I was trying various techniques on it. When I’ve done a few more and checked if the technique works for larger calibre shell splashes (which in this scale will be huge) I will reveal 👍

I have quite a big selection of kits in the pipeline and agree the Z Class and O Class from Tamiya are pretty basic but as a pretty inexperienced modeller, I went for the easy ones to start, that and cheapest as you get two ships in a box with these.

I still open the IBG model stuff I have and see the photo etch and close it up again !

I can confirm no wet palettes were injured in the making of this ship I showed my wife the latest pictures of the destroyers on your website; she was as impressed as I have been. Her query: how long does it take to do a complete ship from first brush stroke to last?

    Many thanks.

It’s quite hard to say as many parts of the process are simply waiting for things to dry. For a Destroyer I would guess.

I build the model in sections first, maybe a couple of hours

Make the base with Polyfilla 20 mins, leave overnight to dry

Paint and detail the base an hour

Prime the parts of the model, 20 minutes, leave to dry overnight

Paint the ship, 2 or 3 hours

Assembly of the painted parts of the ship 30 mins

    Weathering an hour

Final detailing, sea foam etc an hour

So looking at that about 9 hours but with drying time the quickest I could do one would be a couple of days. One way of speeding things up is building multiple models at a time.

My WW1 stuff is complete, I’ve got every Capital Ship and a good proportion of everything the Germans and British built, 350 plus ships so I’m calling that finished.

All in 1/700? That’s staggering! But shame on you – calling it finished without nary a decent Austro-Hungarian hull painted? 😉

God no, the WW1 stuff is in 1/2400 ! Regards Ken The Yarkshire Gamer

Whew! I was beginning to wonder how mad you were. More seriously, I forgot to mention how much I liked your ships in your original post. You should be deservedly proud of those. One imagines you used a wet palette and a lot of contrast paints to achieve that? 😉

I can confirm no wet palettes were injured in the making of this ship 😆

So, will this be the Pratt ballroom approach to naval wargaming? Impressive! WWI still in abeyance then. We will look forward to learning of the WWII exploits;High Noon in Narvik?

Cheers, it will be a rescaling of my current WW2 rules, will work out ranges etc with available space but my club have an old cinema as a meeting place so there is room.

    Hi Tony,

Firstly I hope you have a speedy recovery. Its great to hear you enjoy the Podcast its been great fun doing it over the last 18 months.

Regards payment I don’t receive anything, in fact I pay to have the Podcast hosted by Podbean. I don’t have any sponsorship or Patreon in fact the only income I have ever received is the cash prize from the Little Wars TV Caesar Awards.

I could choose to Monetize the Podcast by having adverts but I really don’t want to do that. I’m happy just doing it for fun as a hobby, it allows me to do what I want when I want and choose my guests based on interest not on pulling power.

    All the best, Regards Ken

    Hi,

The missing reactive armour on the Magachs I a real shame but they have scrubbed up pretty well, Sinai Grey, is Sinai Grey would you believe ! From the Vallejo Air range. I haven’t done any of the earlier sand colour but Vallejo do a paint for it in the same range so I would go for that

Great stuff; always enjoy Desert War gaming. Love the campaign but more than two years since T’YARKSHIRE FERRET gave news of a clash between the GF and the HSF. What have the fleets been up to; the world wonders.

Sadly Covid put a huge hole in it. Game 3 needed a bigger table than we have available here. Our new club building can accommodate so it’s just a case of getting it organised, hopefully soon.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the interest,

ROF is rate of fire and gives you the number of dice a figure with that weapon generates each shot (if they don’t move). So if you stand still with a rifle you get 2 dice, if you move you get 1. Any odd numbers round up.

MM is morale modifier – so if you take a casualty from an LMG when you take a morale check its -1.

Both appear in the videos somewhere

    Hi Norm,

I put an answer on my blog post but for visitors here, I don’t use the Army Painter dip at all, in fact I think it dulls down figures and can destroy detail, great for getting high volumes of figures on the table very quickly but not for me.

My paint style is mostly triads of colours (base, mid tone, highlight), dry brushing and selective use of washes, often over small areas rather than entire figures.

I’ve done some painting tutorials on my Utubes channel Yarkshire Gamer if you want to see my no nonsense methods.

Many thanks Mike, dropping the intensity of the light levels down gets some really nice effects, the higher levels white out the photos for my eyes.

I’ve put some photos on the blog post at different light levels to illustrate, but with distance, position, height and intensity on the lights there are so many variables and that’s before you turn a dial on the camera !
