Angel Barracks
ModeratorYeah should look a lot more like a battle with proper big units.
Shame I never did it in 6mm….Any plans for more ‘filler’ bases
Plans no?
Has it happened by accident?
Yes!
4 models failed on the print bed and I could not be bothered to re-do them, so another Stirland filler.Ideas?

ParticipantOnce saw a lizard man army with Aztec ruins scattered throughout – the odd ruined wall, fence or signpost may work.
Other livestock (esp sheep) to keep up a theme.
Going by the wiki [Fandom] grave sites, rugged rocks and trade wagons (possibly with the odd dwarf) may fit in with the countryside.
Bags of flour looted from a windmill (as you have one made) also springs to mind – possibly with an irate Windy Miller…

Ooooo, I like this idea, Andrew. I bet that’d look really good and add excellent thematic flavor to the units. Could even do the same for the Dark Elves or whomever the opponents will be.

ModeratorLast week my 3d printer started failing prints and no matter what I have done to try and fix it, they keep failing.
So I ordered some Kallistra and they have just arrived.
I will be replacing the Talabheim artillery with new Stirland ones.
Adding some crossbowmen as I don’t have any!!
Replacing some early Stirjaeger with new ones and bulking up my Aversgard.

ParticipantGreat to see more additions to this army, any reason why your swapping out the Talabheim units for Stirland?

ModeratorCannons In Stirland?
Bit posh innit? So yeah, this is possibly a very valid point.
Can Stirland afford lots of cannons and the like, it is known for being the poorest province in the Empire.
Initially I painted my artillery as Talabheim because of that reason, but..Yes, the people of Stirland are poor AF.
But the nobles less so, and I did read that some of the boats of the Stir River Patrol have cannons on their decks. So I figured if the SRP boats have them, and given Wurtbad is the wine capital of the Empire and believe it or not has a semi decent tourist trade, I figured the capital will be able to afford a few.
It has the same ‘wealth value’ as Wissenberg, Talabheim, Wolfenburg and other Imperial capitals.I am also toying with the idea that within Stirland the various landed nobles of significant wealth are each responsible for having and maintaining a certain number of cannon each.
This will I suspect turn into a sort of competition in which the nobles trying to garner favour from Alberich Haupt-Anderssen.
As such they invest what they have into making sure they have at least one very nice pretty artillery piece, this concentration of monies means of course the peasants and regular troops get less funding. This seems apt for the Empire and Stirland.
So yeah, let Stirland have some big guns, I will get painting them soon…

ParticipantThat makes a lot of sense. Each one is probably a little work of art, their crews probably dressed in finery. I can imagine the nobles having a yearly competition predicated on some rules they come up with, mostly based on pageantry but with accuracy/ability in there towards the bottom of the criteria. Might even have the side effect of making the crews a bit more able than most, but also the butt of jokes or derision from the commoners. Cannoneer positions could be quite coveted, maybe even have a bit of a cottage industry related to patronage for placement.

ParticipantJust think about the poor relative – their cannon may not have wheels!
I love the early gunpowder siege cannons that needed to be part buried before firing. Even the smaller ones look cute but neither are practical for most dynamic games though.
Home made volley / organ / Helblaster guns anyone???

ModeratorCheers, not so keen on terrain that can’t move being used as a unit filler, seems wrong that walls and fences follow the unit around the battlefield. I know many do this, but it does not work for me… Sorry.
Regimental Bear:

ParticipantLooks like that will be a fantastic addition to your unit, that bear is lovely.

ParticipantNice – good to keep the troops entertained 🙂
You could add baggage trains and camp followers rather than the scenery.

ParticipantRegimental bear… that’ll be a little hard to put on a staff and wave around.
But really, that’s a good looking unit my dear sir.

ParticipantThat unit is looking really good, the unit filler fits in seemlessly as well.

ParticipantTake it you got the DM 🙂
It will really do damage to the guy with the ramrod!
Any reason the crew are loose and not on the main base? Wound markers?

ParticipantMakes sense – too long since I played mass troop games compared to skirmish 🙂
You mentioned your printer was poorly – I just came across Mighty Minis [Warmaster link] who have some nice Empire figures if you get stuck for things to paint – the Hero A – Warpriest is absolutely great.

ParticipantLove the use of the barrel as a support – you did say they where poor 🙂
I take it the owner could afford the gunners or the full cannon and not both!
Is that banner freehand? Very neat and tidy…
Are they sat on 40x40mm bases (sorry lost track of the single figure size over the thread)?

ParticipantAmazing job on the painting and bases. I kinda missed this thread before, but are you using the different coloured base edges to help id which faction each unit is?

ModeratorThanks both.
With the trays when I was trying to decide if to go goblin green, black, or flock and blend them into the table I had the notion of colour co-ordinating them with the uniforms.
I have colour co-ordinated dice for each unit so maybe the movement trays can match the uniforms too.
I tried it and decided to stick with it.😀
There is no benefit game wise to it, my unit cards help me know what the stats are for each unit:
It is purely for the visual look of it all.

ParticipantGood call – flock trays for formations would not look as neat as these.
For orcs etc they are fine but Empire troops need these 🙂
