Yeah should look a lot more like a battle with proper big units.
Shame I never did it in 6mm….
Any plans for more ‘filler’ bases
Has it happened by accident?
4 models failed on the print bed and I could not be bothered to re-do them, so another Stirland filler.
Ideas?02/08/2023 at 09:42 #189106
Once saw a lizard man army with Aztec ruins scattered throughout – the odd ruined wall, fence or signpost may work.
Other livestock (esp sheep) to keep up a theme.
Going by the wiki [Fandom] grave sites, rugged rocks and trade wagons (possibly with the odd dwarf) may fit in with the countryside.
Bags of flour looted from a windmill (as you have one made) also springs to mind – possibly with an irate Windy Miller…02/08/2023 at 14:58 #189125

Ooooo, I like this idea, Andrew. I bet that’d look really good and add excellent thematic flavor to the units. Could even do the same for the Dark Elves or whomever the opponents will be.

Last week my 3d printer started failing prints and no matter what I have done to try and fix it, they keep failing.
So I ordered some Kallistra and they have just arrived.
I will be replacing the Talabheim artillery with new Stirland ones.
Adding some crossbowmen as I don’t have any!!
Replacing some early Stirjaeger with new ones and bulking up my Aversgard.08/08/2023 at 14:34 #189342
Great to see more additions to this army, any reason why your swapping out the Talabheim units for Stirland?08/08/2023 at 15:23 #18934510/08/2023 at 09:59 #189414
Cannons In Stirland?
Bit posh innit?
So yeah, this is possibly a very valid point.
Can Stirland afford lots of cannons and the like, it is known for being the poorest province in the Empire.
Initially I painted my artillery as Talabheim because of that reason, but..
Yes, the people of Stirland are poor AF.
But the nobles less so, and I did read that some of the boats of the Stir River Patrol have cannons on their decks.
So I figured if the SRP boats have them, and given Wurtbad is the wine capital of the Empire and believe it or not has a semi decent tourist trade, I figured the capital will be able to afford a few.
It has the same ‘wealth value’ as Wissenberg, Talabheim, Wolfenburg and other Imperial capitals.
I am also toying with the idea that within Stirland the various landed nobles of significant wealth are each responsible for having and maintaining a certain number of cannon each.
This will I suspect turn into a sort of competition in which the nobles trying to garner favour from Alberich Haupt-Anderssen.
As such they invest what they have into making sure they have at least one very nice pretty artillery piece, this concentration of monies means of course the peasants and regular troops get less funding.
This seems apt for the Empire and Stirland.
So yeah, let Stirland have some big guns, I will get painting them soon…10/08/2023 at 15:05 #189421
That makes a lot of sense. Each one is probably a little work of art, their crews probably dressed in finery. I can imagine the nobles having a yearly competition predicated on some rules they come up with, mostly based on pageantry but with accuracy/ability in there towards the bottom of the criteria. Might even have the side effect of making the crews a bit more able than most, but also the butt of jokes or derision from the commoners. Cannoneer positions could be quite coveted, maybe even have a bit of a cottage industry related to patronage for placement.

Just think about the poor relative – their cannon may not have wheels!
I love the early gunpowder siege cannons that needed to be part buried before firing. Even the smaller ones look cute but neither are practical for most dynamic games though.
Home made volley / organ / Helblaster guns anyone???11/08/2023 at 22:44 #189489
Cheers, not so keen on terrain that can’t move being used as a unit filler, seems wrong that walls and fences follow the unit around the battlefield. I know many do this, but it does not work for me… Sorry.
Regimental Bear:12/08/2023 at 10:41 #189497
Looks like that will be a fantastic addition to your unit, that bear is lovely.12/08/2023 at 12:12 #189501
Nice – good to keep the troops entertained 🙂
You could add baggage trains and camp followers rather than the scenery.12/08/2023 at 12:18 #18950214/08/2023 at 08:59 #18953414/08/2023 at 17:09 #189561
Regimental bear… that’ll be a little hard to put on a staff and wave around.
But really, that’s a good looking unit my dear sir.

That unit is looking really good, the unit filler fits in seemlessly as well.19/08/2023 at 09:45 #18974021/08/2023 at 16:40 #18982722/08/2023 at 09:56 #189855
I have added more pictures of units and more background about them to The Empire Forces page.
Go explore!!25/08/2023 at 21:51 #18999925/08/2023 at 22:04 #190000
Looks nice and solid – not something I would want to run into in less than a Miragliano tank TBH.25/08/2023 at 22:19 #19000126/08/2023 at 18:38 #19003826/08/2023 at 21:08 #190039
Take it you got the DM 🙂
It will really do damage to the guy with the ramrod!
Any reason the crew are loose and not on the main base? Wound markers?26/08/2023 at 23:20 #19004228/08/2023 at 02:24 #190056
Makes sense – too long since I played mass troop games compared to skirmish 🙂
You mentioned your printer was poorly – I just came across Mighty Minis [Warmaster link] who have some nice Empire figures if you get stuck for things to paint – the Hero A – Warpriest is absolutely great.07/09/2023 at 18:40 #19041907/09/2023 at 20:03 #19042007/09/2023 at 20:12 #190421
Love the use of the barrel as a support – you did say they where poor 🙂
I take it the owner could afford the gunners or the full cannon and not both!
Is that banner freehand? Very neat and tidy…
Are they sat on 40x40mm bases (sorry lost track of the single figure size over the thread)?07/09/2023 at 20:17 #19042208/09/2023 at 15:06 #190456
Using that barrel, that is greatness! It makes for a wonderful nod to your setting background.

A lovely little battery an a great addition to the army.19/09/2023 at 07:15 #1907486mmwargamingParticipant
Amazing job on the painting and bases. I kinda missed this thread before, but are you using the different coloured base edges to help id which faction each unit is?

With the trays when I was trying to decide if to go goblin green, black, or flock and blend them into the table I had the notion of colour co-ordinating them with the uniforms.
I have colour co-ordinated dice for each unit so maybe the movement trays can match the uniforms too.
I tried it and decided to stick with it.
There is no benefit game wise to it, my unit cards help me know what the stats are for each unit:
It is purely for the visual look of it all.19/09/2023 at 10:02 #190759
Good call – flock trays for formations would not look as neat as these.
For orcs etc they are fine but Empire troops need these 🙂09/10/2023 at 18:33 #191377
So. I roped Samantha into some wargaming and I have decided to carry on my OSR vibe with WFB. I have ordered: Some 10mm dark elves from Pendraken. I also ordered some 10mm fantasy humans from them. Some trees from ebay. A big static grass mat from a model train shop and some loose static grass of the same colour. I am waiting to get an invoice for 27 self adhesive cork floor tiles so I can make the gaming surface. Then last night I noticed that Pendraken do some lovely historicals that are even better for my Empire themed army so bought a shed load of those too. Once the figures arrive I shall set about working out how best to individually base them and get the bases on order and then start the painting. I will then of course need a few buildings which I will probably get from Battlescale. This is exciting but expensive, no idea how you regular gamers manage so many things at once… Updates to follow.
Wow, three years ago to the day…09/10/2023 at 19:44 #191382
Have y’all been able to play any games lately?

Have y’all been able to play any games lately?
I mentioned 10mm WFB to a few guys at the local club, 1 said he would be well up for it and bought some STLs and printed and painted some.
But it turns it he does not want to do it any more.
Another guy seems keen and bough a Chaos army and is in the process of painting some so that is promising, and the other guy despite showing interest has ignored my invitations to come round and play some games to see if he likes it..
So looks like hopefully 1 of the 3 may actually be someone to play with.
No games in at least a year-ish I would say?
Happy birthday to you! Did you have cake???
Alas not, but my actual birthday is next month so maybe..
