ParticipantThe established member — a second-year lawyer, as I recall — smiled and fixed me with eyes in which I think I detected the first glimmerings of insanity, then demanded “What 5,000-point army do you recommend to beat Seleucids?” Didn’t even bother to specify fourth or fifth edition. All the best, John.
…and today that man is a cabinet minister!

ParticipantWelcome to the pre-single-market world
I’m old enough to remember I had to go to a customs office (I live in Belgium) to collect my packages that came from abroad and pay import taxes. And yes, sometimes something came through undetected, but usually not from companies. Every package normally needs a label declaring its value etc. I’m not completely familiar with all new rules when ordering something from the UK now, but I have decided not to order anything from the UK for the coming months and wait it out till the dust settles. And yes, that also means I will probably start looking for alternatives and wargaming manufacturers this side of the channel. As has been said numerous times, big multinational companies can handle these sort of changes. Small companies will pay the price.
Buying stuff from around the world and paying some form of extra charge is something that a lot of people are already familiar with. My son and daughter both buy non-wargaming bits and bobs from the US, and a bloke I know buys retro electronic parts from Japan and China. They pay the extra when the package turns up.
The difference with this new VAT regulation is that the onus is placed on the supplier on the other side of the world to pay, not the consumer. The effect is that small companies are discouraged from selling direct to customers in Britain and the EU ( don’t forget, this is an EU regulation that Britain has implemented early).
This appears to be a way of handing even more power over to Amazon and EBay…

ParticipantSo how do they propose to enforce this?
If, for example, Snake Boots Figures of Arkansas sell me twenty quids worth of stuff and they can’t be arsed to get VAT registered, what happens? How is the package identified as having VAT owing? Is the package impounded? Is a bill from HMRC sent stateside? Or a crack team of HMRC enforcers? What about the poor old UK customer who has shelled out for stuff and not received it through no fault of their own?

ParticipantI use a white Gelly Roll for the crossbelts on 6mm Napoleonics. Not had any problems…

ParticipantConnard, you are clearly in the ‘not a tightwad’ camp! But you must admit that there are a fair few wargamers, especially on the Internet, who whinge about spending an extra twenty or thirty quid.
My point about other hobbies is that, in my experience, there seems to be more…eagerness to spend money on something flashy.
But yeah, there are a lot of people selling wargaming stuff so somebody somewhere is buying it!
Cerdic
ParticipantI remember when car manufacturers discovered this sort of stuff a few years back. They got all excited about the possibilities, and Nissan and Alfa Romeo actually sold cars painted in it.
The problem was that the shades produced with the available technology were really manky so the whole idea was quietly dropped…
Cerdic
ParticipantJohn, you shouldn’t worry about posting a load of drivel. This is the Internet….
Cerdic
ParticipantWell, this has been an interesting read.
The simplistic answer to the title question is: some do, some don’t.
At the end of the day it is all market driven, isn’t it. There are a myriad of business strategies used and there seems to be a space for all of them. On my blog, for example, I have listed over 200 manufacturers of 28mm historical figures alone! I haven’t even looked at the 28mm sci-Fi/fantasy types, the 20mm, the 15mm, the 10mm, the 6mm etc etc…
Summat for everyone!
My personal opinion is that the tightwad tendency does seem to be over-represented among wargamers. My other hobbies include cycling and old cars. You should see how much some of those people spend on their hobbies!

ParticipantNice Jaaaaag…
Cerdic
ParticipantThere are a couple of other manufacturers of Border Reivers…

I wasn’t aware of Colonel Bill’s D’Arlo range, just the Depot Battalion stuff, so that will have to be added!
Cerdic
ParticipantSo. You’re just as good at doing tanks as you are at figures.
Gunny mate, I hate you…
Cerdic
ParticipantHeresy! Next you’ll be suggesting inviting select knights to come and sit at your table…

ParticipantMore lovely work. Bit good at this painting lark, aren’t ya!

ParticipantSounds like Thad should be driving a yellow three-wheeled van…
So, plouc? That is what Bretons are called by the rest of France? Have I got that right? Dare one ask what it means?
Cerdic
ParticipantI’m off to see it in a couple of hours or so.
Like deephorse, I had become less keen on going out to the cinema. But they have recently built a new one just a fifteen-minute walk away. Much nicer, with big reclining seats and proper leg room. Now all they need to do is get rid of the smell of popcorn…

ParticipantTopic freshness in the main menu is a great idea! I vote to keep it as a permanent feature…

ParticipantAh, the good old quality v. quantity conundrum.
Its interesting that you can see the same concept in nature. For example, how do you ensure you have surviving offspring? Some fish lay thousands of eggs at a time and then abandon them. Almost all will get eaten, but one or two will survive to become adults. At the other extreme, Great Apes have very few young but invest a lot of time and resources in rearing them.
Or a slightly more wargamery example; Tiger or Sherman?
Cerdic
ParticipantMy ‘best’ standard is so low that if I painted worse the paint would have to miss the figure entirely!
Cerdic
ParticipantAh, I see!
I was confused by the lack of leathery bondage type gear adorning the hairy raiders…
Cerdic
ParticipantLovely stuff! Thorkell the Tall looks like he enjoys a bit of a laugh over a pint of mead.
One small thing though. Surely the correct form would be Jarl Putrid Putridsson….
Cerdic
ParticipantLooking for actual steel ball bearings? Pop down to your nearest bicycle shop. They will have decent quality ball bearings that cost peanuts…
Cerdic
ParticipantBeautiful work once again, Gunny mate!
Cerdic
ParticipantImpressive array!

ParticipantShed in the back garden for me! It’s got electric, heat and light, so I can use it all year round…
Cerdic
ParticipantMaybe by the time the Valentine was in production they had worked out a tweek that fixed the problem. Sometimes in engineering a very minor modification can make a big difference…
Cerdic
ParticipantNow, THAT is a good looking game!
I like the brown rivers. Are they home-made or bought from somewhere?
Cerdic
ParticipantWorks for me. I’m using an old iPad, if that’s relevant.
After scanning the news items, I usually go straight to the ‘Topics Freshness’ option.
Cerdic
ParticipantNice!
Although they look a little underdressed for the weather conditions to my soft southern English eyes. No doubt my Geordie countrymen will disagree..
Cerdic
ParticipantNo. It’s not just you. Six quid is bonkers…
Cerdic
ParticipantI used spray on oven cleaner ( the foamy stuff) on some 1970s vintage Airfix figures with ancient Humbrol paint jobs.
I used pretty much the same method that Guy described for his Dettol!
Cerdic
ParticipantLovely job!
The markings are a special D-Day feature. They show how deeply your tank has sunk after it falls off the front of your landing craft…
Cerdic
ParticipantNice work. Is it just me or has that bloke got a MASSIVE sword?
Cerdic
ParticipantPretty damn spiffing!
Cerdic
ParticipantThe missus had it on as she has read the books. She quite liked it.
I’ve not read the books, and fantasy-type stuff is not really my sort of thing. I was a bit bored and confused, but maybe I’m not the target audience anyway.
Cerdic
ParticipantWhere are the ice cream vans?
Cerdic
ParticipantJolly good show!
