For those with time on their hands,  The Serial Squadron has now uploaded 5 chapters. Here’s Chapter 2:

in reply to: Taking the plunge into AWI #124042

Interesting  blog post there, jeffers, and I look forward to more AWI posts.

I’m with you on the Greg Novak books. Unfortunately, when Old Glory printed them, they accidentally left out most of the bibliography, which IIRC cuts off around the “F’s”. Ironic, considering Greg was grouchy about criticism of his first booklet as lacking in that respect. I don’t imagine he was pleased.

I asked Russ about it, who responded that, out of the hundreds of copies sold, my complaint was the fourth on that problem. I didn’t think to ask if he still had the missing material.

    BTW: Dumping your library? Nonononono!

in reply to: A man walks into a bookshshop….. #124041

A charity shop puts a different light on things. They can’t be expected to be as knowledgeable as a bookshop owner. If the latter doesn’t know his stuff, that’s down to him.

    Good for you.

That said, I’m not sure I would have passed the “moral”  roll!

If you don’t mind shifting things east, Alternative Armies has their Japanese monster hunting game. It’s tempted me for a while now, but I really don’t need another project! FYI: https://www.alternative-armies.com/collections/sengoku-15mm-japanese-fantasy

    How about a kappa?

    I feel your pain.

OK, I  confess: AWI (along with FIW) struck me as being ideal for 40mm — not a great many units, very little cavalry or artillery. I stand by that. Except. . .

After starting on the project, and re-immersing myself in the history, I found myself saying “aw, jeez, I  can’t do Brandywine with these!”

Then I stumbled across big pile of the Old Glory 10mm at a con flea market. So now it’s A Tale of Two Scales.

    Neat idea, well-executed. Congrats.

I, too, put off AWI for years, and I too, took the plunge with 40mm — Sash and Saber, in my case. If you haven’t already bought into 25mm, and especially if you’re in the US, I’d suggest looking into them; when purchased in the sets, they’re cheaper than many 25mm lines. And if you can get to a con, Chris has a buy-5-get-one-free deal.

The quality is certainly improved. Checking the site, it looks as if it will soon be on preorder:

in reply to: AWI at A Bridge Too Lard Game Day #123215

Thanks. Real Life got in the way of hobby stuff about the time Huzzah opened, so I never heard of them either. I’ll try to get by there at some point.

in reply to: AWI at A Bridge Too Lard Game Day #123153

Well drat, just shows how out of touch I’ve been — I  was in Leesburg, and didn’t know anything about it!

    Maybe next time.

in reply to: The Black Legion of the REPUBLIC… #122770

I find humor in the fact that I was half-hoping for a game of the Bogart film.

This Black Legion looks plenty mean too, though — I’m tempted!

in reply to: Model making is not a crime! #122627

I believe I’d want to convert some well-dressed young gentleman figures into bun-throwers, giving them some sort of “public humiliation” ability.

But perhaps I’m not treating the subject with the seriousness it deserves.

Edit: Speaking of public humiliation, thanks all for not mentioning my faux pas with the “shotguns” comment — I didn’t bother expanding the Drones pic on my phone. Oops!

in reply to: Sculpted Greens for kick starter #122599

    Tag says hob goblins.

in reply to: Model making is not a crime! #122458

Indeed. Now, who makes a Jeeves?

    Enlarged occipital and parietal required.

in reply to: Model making is not a crime! #122369

Bertie and the Drones with shotguns?

    I forsee a number of self-inflicted wounds!

in reply to: Model making is not a crime! #122351

I have to break in here to say that is a very impressive model! Kudos!

I’d play, but only if I get to be Bertie Wooster. Which leads me to ask, does anyone make a suitable figure?

in reply to: 500 Blog Posts and Climbing #122331

Welcome to the forum, Jacob — it’s a great place.

And don’t feel foolish about the mistake; “A. N. Other” is a usage pretty much restricted to the UK — I remember being slightly nonplussed myself, on first seeing it in the pages of Military Modeling, lo these many decades ago.

Should you be looking for Battle Honors figures in any quantity,  postage costs may be offset by the large discounts for bulk orders — up to 40%:

One of the comments on that blog mentions having to hand-carve their D20’s.

Ah, the Golden Age of Wargaming!

in reply to: Model making is not a crime! #121840

VBCW, huh? I wonder what they’ll do, when someone there stumbles across this?

I’d tend to put much of this down to simple ignorance.

Update, to add a fairly recent sort of overview of the series:

in reply to: Not to paint is to die a little #121170

    Finishing a project.

    What’s that like?

in reply to: Not to paint is to die a little #121151

Is “Drunkpainting” the hobby equivalent of Drunkposting?

I’ll confess to a number of instances of drunkgaming, but the results there are at least humorous — and better, impermanent.

Considering my painting efforts while sober, I hate to think. . .hmm. . .well, actually, in my case, it might help.

I spent my adolescent years down in the basement, assembling plastic kits with tube, then Testors plastic-dissolving liquid, and painting them with Testors, then Pactra (“flat paints? Hurrah!”) enamels.

Dis make me man I arm today.

in reply to: Shooty & Stabby Zulus #120274

It’s certainly possible in TSATF to incorporate shootys into stabby units; a friend does this regularly, to allow each player an opportunity to both shoot and stab. It does dilute the firepower, but as someone said, “a Zulu with a gun is a Zulu without an assegai”.

OTOH, I  played in one such game in which one of two shots from an impi killed the senior British officer. Such is TSATF.

“Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun of Dork!”

Wait — should that be “Mork”?

in reply to: Hittites and iron weapons #120184

Fragile, too — once the edge chips, there’s no sharpening it — time for a new one.

Where would the Sumerians be getting all this stone, I wonder?

in reply to: State of the Union #120080

Holy Hannah, that’s a stinkin’ pile o’ spam! Must be a powerful filter.

Could you go over to Frothers and fix theirs?

in reply to: What is Lacepunk? #119431

Another example from fiction would be the “Age of Unreason” four-volume series by J. Gregory Keyes, (starring a young Benjamin Franklin), in which, among other things, alchemy actually works.

in reply to: Old West skirmish as a minor project? #119142

A possible alternative is the cheap train sets sold in big box stores like Walmart and Target, or whatever the equivalent is where you are.  Often around S scale (or gauge) which is fairly close to 25mm. Some are “old-timey”  (19th century) too. Often on sale for  $10 where I am.  Somewhat garish, and might need some work, depending on what looks good to you, but I’ve seen pics of these on the  game table that look very impressive.

I believe Ochoin posted about an exhibition game his group does, though I assume theirs was probably HO. He may be able to provide some tips.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find  some youtuber has posted a tutorial.

in reply to: Old West skirmish as a minor project? #119036

On time and space: I bought my Western figures during the Foundry “deal” days, so have more than I’ll likely ever get to*, but I picked out a few to paint right away, then made some simple adobe buildings out of foam core. Construction and painting took a couple of afternoons. As for space, I designed the buildings to nest within each other to an extent,  so they all fit into a fairly smallish box. Add a couple of bags of wooden barrels and pots from the craft store, for figures to hide behind, and I had a decent enough setup for a satisfying game set in Old California, or just over the border in Mexico.

That turned out to be a good choice for versatility, too — they’ve since seen service in North Africa  (FFL),  Sudan, and will appear in India (soon, I hope).  And come to think of it, if I ever got to them, the Caribbean, Zorro, and a  “Certain Barbarian”  too.

*Plus, a guy at a flea market offered me a good deal on a box of “about 30” figures, which, when I got home and counted, turned out to be “about a hundred”. Brother — no wonder the box was so heavy. Not that I’m complaining!

in reply to: Scared off gaming #118964

I dunno — probably as historical as some Ancients armies I’ve seen.

“My coat? Oh — er, yes, thank you.”

in reply to: Scared off gaming #118945

    /endthread

    Could be looking at that.

Nah — everyone here evidently has a functioning brain.

in reply to: "Don't just stand there, get one up!" #118657

Oh yeah,  they were great! Sorry they went out of business. I have a couple of the big R/C Stuarts.

And a mess of the 1/144 stuff. German tanks are a bit large,  but the Shermans fit well with Minifigs.

A few of the 1/48 pieces too, come to think of it.

in reply to: RIP Rutger Hauer. #118600

    I thank the God.

Guess I could argue that it was was in the books first, so doesn’t count.

Which reminds me — RIP Philip K. Dick.

in reply to: RIP Rutger Hauer. #118530

Er, before anyone reminds me, I  forgot quidditch.

in reply to: RIP Rutger Hauer. #118484

Not many people can say they starred in a movie that inspired  a new sport.

in reply to: DBA 3.0 Review #118371

6mm on 25mm groundscale  (i.e. 60mm) bases look very impressive indeed. AFAIK Baccus still offers special packs for this option.

in reply to: Give him a bonk on the melon!!! #118343

Topping bonker, lad! Now, how about the melon? Could it be a mere misspelling of the Sindarin?

    “Let me in!”

    “Friend or foe?”

    “Er — Mellon!

    BONK!
