i love every bit of this. but we have talked about this on your facebook page. 🙂
solo play is great, expanded solo play is better.  I would love something generic. my issue with some systems like the rangers one is its specific to the setting and he doesnt like the idea of making a more generic supplement. So if you dont want to play rangers vs gnolls tough titty.  Make a quick reference sheet and have a good index(something the rangers game is seriously lacking-especially as a solo player, i dont want to be digging through rules)

ive said this elsewhere but in the US there is an issue with people shooting up schools and churches and movie theaters and garlic fesitivals, all sorts of places that shouldnt be getting shot up. The people who tend to do this(though not always) espouse white supremacist rhetoric.  While this did not happen in the US, i would say this is not too far off of what should have happened.   the only part really is how the school and how the cops interacted. The school should have had whatever convesation wiht the family that the cops had and ended this in house. Do i think the school deserves legal action? no, thats assinine.   they did their job and if this kid had been found to own guns or knives or whatever else, or was about to do something horrible, we would be having a slightly different conversation. Thats important to all of this too.

Who is being uncool? Could you drop me a pm or email please?

well i feel stupid. It looks like they were dicks like three years ago! lol. i didnt realize the thread was that old. But it was toward the front, just on the first page.   a couple guys were being poopy. I am pretty sure they have had time to work that it.. i feel like an ass, but my sentiment is the same.

My impression is that, here on TWW, non-fantastical gaming (meaning historicals and moderns combined, also including what-if and imagi-nations settings that don’t stray into superscience or the occult) has a larger presence than fantastical gaming (meaning not just fantasy and sci-fi in their orthodox sense, but also genres like post-apoc, VSF/steampunk, Weird West, WWW2, larger-than-life pulp and spy-fi adventures, superheroes, horror with its various subgenres, etc.). I don’t necessarily correlate “presence” directly with the amount of posts each subject receives – it’s not quite that easy-to-communicate of a feeling, but I feel it. As someone who’s primarily interested in fantastical gaming, I sometimes feel like an unwelcome disruptive element at TWW, but I’m doing my best to change that by asserting the place of fantasticals in the mix, while also making an effort to engage in topics about historicals and moderns (for instance by posting encouraging comments when others post photos of historical/modern subjects) to counteract this becoming a community of two camps. That said, I also feel that fantastical gaming has been slowly “growing into” its allotted space in TWW, meaning that non-fantastical gaming used to be even more dominant in the past but the scales have been gradually evening out. In the early days, fantasy didn’t even have much presence at all here. It was mostly just sci-fi. Fantasy was a late bloomer. Those other genres of fantasticals I mentioned earlier have only begun to bloom a little by now – I can think of a small few threads for post-apoc, pulp or horror on TWW over the years, but not many, and none for the remaining genres. On a different subject, my interests in fantasy and sci-fi are subdivided to the extent that I feel it’s silly to just speak of “fantasy” as one genre and “sci-fi” as another. Mike asked me once to describe “my 15mm fantasy project”. I didn’t know quite how to respond to that as I have several: One for Conan-style swords-and-sorcery, one for classic Tolkienesque fantasy, one for a decidedly more edgy, WHFB-esque fantasy aesthetic using only Ben Siens sculpts, and one for Japanese fantasy. There’s yet more in other scales. To be clear, that’s not to say I think TWW’s fantasy and sci-fi boards should be subdivided, just in case anyone was misinterpreting my point.

i agree here. at least i feel all the different genres are about equally represented, at least as offered topics.   maybe we dont have enough people yet to make them all super busy all the time.  i like it here man- well one thing i would disagree with: you arent disruptive.. 🙂

RIght now i am painting my dark fable conan stuff and my cold wars flash gordons. but as far as games i have played in the last 6-12 months all have been historical games.

I belong to a club down here (i am at 44 one of the younger ones) and we play once a month, we did play a game of battlefleet gothic, but normally its colonials, ( i run my semi famous gunga din game a couple times a year, one guy does 15mm zulu, for both we use Sword and the Flame) we play naval stuff, they have some HUGE ass 25mm pirate ships and every xmas we have a “regatta” using limies and slimies

I also run games here at the local HMGS south and HMGS events. so thats florida and pa. all historical games. when we do those at historicon they give my buddy and i our own room and i have to say in the last few years i have not played in anyone elses games as we literally spend most of the time running ours. maybe 20 games for the weekend. covering periods like Lewis and Clark, F&I war, civil war. I am supposed to be painting 15mm mexican american war figs but ive been lazy on that front(for like 2 years now!!!)  Most of what i have listed has been played in th elast 6 months.

I think it is a trick of the lighting. It is actually a grey towel bleached with brown patches. Like these

i was going to say “your son must have found my dads old car from the 70s and taken out the carpet!”  but you are right, the purple is the light and camera reacting to the brown. you can see the “wood” on the last image with no shag also looks purple

area code is the first part of our phone number. Here in Florida where i live my number would be 1-954-xxx-xxxx

i see we both got confused by our names. my actual given name is in fact devon start. rather an unfortunate moniker to say the least. The cool thing is we did find out well after i was named that our ancestors did however come from Devon England. Its a place i want to visit. Apparently Start Point is somehow part of the thing too but im not sure how.

At least in the conan books the “high fantasy” stuff is given an explanation.

why can swords harm demons and magic monsters(at least in the stuff written by howard, in the total crap written by other authors anything goes.. crom even answers prayers-ugh) because in order to in the material universe they have to clothe themselves in the materials of this universe. THey are then bound by the rules of this universe. That is to say more to the point you can kill its body, it will just be banished.

Or something like a blade made from a meteor could kill the monster(in this case its almost krpytonite as, at least in the conan books, most of the monsters come from the cosmic gulfs of space)

for your elemental, the fire itself is still fire, granted its sentient fire. That alone is pretty terrible, maybe you can put it out with a bucket brigade but its smart and unlike mundane fire, isnt going to wait for you to smother it. its going to attack and be directed by a malevolent intelligence. but hey it probably still cant cross water.. maybe what ever is causing it to burn without fuel is however resistant all but the most torrential downpours. give it a weakness that can be discovered and exploited(maybe) i mean you might find a hedge wizard that can summon a rain storm

Dragons in the conan world are always some sort of throw back dinosaur or something similar. never fire breathing smaugs. (and even tolkien gives a damn good reason for dragons existence) so what they call a dragon isnt really a dragon but some long lost throw back.

Use magic to combat/undo a summoning?

Not officially. You undo a summoning by kicking its ass.

this was certainly conans go to method

i would use them for EVERYTHING. I would try to get a set to do a nice generic set first.  Depending on what they have i would make a river too.

if they worked ou the way i expect i would then expand out to make either desert terrain or maybe a city scape.

I wasn’t aware Pinnacle made miniatures, and for genres I’m highly interested in to boot. Soderquist is a favourite sculptor of mine as well, although something about his sculpting style usually makes me want to not mix it with figures from other sculptors. Still, those Flash Gordon miniatures from Pinnacle look compatible enough in terms of style, and I’ve never known Soderquist to sculpt “small” miniatures in the nominal scales he works in. Thanks for the comparison shots. Much appreciated.

Totally. I love bronze age.. i have a lot of the original john carter figs he did. I have to get some of the new ones hes done. I also have a bunch of his conan figures(in case the profile pic didnt give it away im a fan of conan) his figs are like bob murch at pulp figures.. they all go together really one within the set but dont always match with other peoples figs outside the set. and i love both artists work!

Bronze age stuff tends to be a little tall too, but thats fine, i think its going to scale well with the other figs. Either way for the game im in for the cold wars stuff, im going to go with those. Mostly because they have the rocket cycle and thats a feature of the battle

The other stuff i am getting becuase i really like painting and honestly having a few different versions of flash gordon on the shelf isnt a problem for me.
I also have already the one that rattrap productions put out years ago, he is slender more like Paroom station or old ral parthas.   And i also have the Dick garrison “flash and vultan” and the crooked dice sam j jones flash.. but he is dressed in earth clothes, so if i were to do the football fight scene he would be perfect!  but not for much else

Some size comparisons.   The Hydra Miniatures have the flat integral bases, the Cold War Miniatures have the Slotta Base.

They look pretty compatible EXCEPT hydras flash gordon is a bit too tall, at least if he stood up. (maybe)

I have to see how these scale up against the now out of print Dick Garrison line and the Pinnacle miniatures, which were sculpted by a fan favorite David Soderquist of Bronze Age Miniatures. The pinnacle figs are also en route even if i dont use them, painting them will be a blast!

obviously i have the flash gordon serials too. at least a series, i think there were ratehr a lot of those. When i was younger in the  late 70s and early 80s i would watch dr who and flash gordon serials on PBS(americas public broadcast station) tom baker who followed by old serials? Yes! Please!

I too am interested in compatibility with Hydra. Just out of curiosity, you see. PS: I think I was misquoted up there somewhere. . .

ill keep you posted.. strictly for scientific reasons of course 🙂
the hydra stuff showed up already, being that its from the US and i am in the US this is no surprise.. That is was in the US was a surprise and i have no idea why i thought it was a UK company.

the hydra guys are clearly bigger than my normal 28s so i am pretty confident that they will be the same size.

i am hoping the cold war stuff is size compatible with the stuff from hydra. i really like thei imperials they have. Plus thier ming character(cold war as yet doesnt have one) but i really like the look of the cold wars figs, especially the jet bike version of flash.. and the really simple rather toy soldier look of mings guards.  the cold war figs are billed as 32mm so im figuring they are the size of newer warhammer figures.  I got a couple hydra figs too, i think their flash and ming, to test out the size. I would happily paint up the flash and ming from anyone really. Like conan its a character i have stand to have a few versions of

yeah vultan has always been portrayed as a fat bastard.. though really i think they missed the chance and should have had him play prince thun.. who is often depicted in the comics as an orange brian blessed! lol. although the idea of sci fi space zulus is really cool too!

as for the price range.. i have no children, this makes this easier.. but you know, i have no children and thats sort of sad really.. i guess, i dont know.

yeah i was thinking some basic tubes in acrylic.. Ahh yes the price would normally be expensive and might still be, but i work in the display industry, and i know a guy who makes custom acrylic, he may have off cuts or something for me.

if not i might be able to find something suitable on amazon or ebay, a guy at my local club uses these acrylic cylinders he got from a lighting guy. they are supposed to cover the lamp area and they are big..too big for my use, but we use them at teh club to roll dice in

    a few points.

    1. if  you are going to get into painting whole hog, then buy good paints designed for miniatures, youll be happier. less work really. they come ready to go.Its worth the couple of extra bucks.

    2. same goes for brushes. dont skimp and get cheap brushes, youll replace them. i have been using the same few stable of good brushes for several years now. They are tools and a good tool pays for itself.

    3. colors! you are doing sci fi! so it doesnt really matter.  if you are doing aliens, perhaps they share your color blindness, or at least to those of us who are not color blind, it might impart a strange other wordliness to it. use that to your advantage!  at the same time, tell us a abit more about the universe you are thinking about? it might be that bright blues and reds are more appropriate to the realism of you world. having said that i paint historical, sci fi and fantasy minis and always find some excuse for bright colors somewhere. So that is all personal to how you want to do it.

4 if you are going to use the craft paints then look for FLOW ENHANCER. its what you will want to use to thin your paints. or they really are going to be too thick and take away some of the detail(i used to paint with craft paints all through high school and college and before i got a grown up job as they were less expensive) the flow enhancer will help out a lot, its essentially the clear part of the paint.   dont thin it with water, while that will work its less than ideal.

if you are on facebook i run a group called Miniature Painting Noobs(not to be confused with noobs painting miniatures)

Optimally you have two different compatible games you run. Burning sands will clearly work for the land based actions and the role playing parts of the conan style story.

so you have one game half where they players get to the mysterious island and they fight in boats.. maybe they have to run a blockade or something. Combat might be bigger and more “massed” but the way skills and skill checks for heros works the same. so you can use the same character sheet.

When you get off the boat you switch to the more tradtional burning sands game as you explore a template or whatever

given the nature of the game, it would be implied that the attacker is trying to board and catpure the defender, not sink him. Usually in the stories they are intent on taking the ships.

    Two things too.

    1. in most of the stories they lack any weapons on the ships to do enough damage to sink it. In conan the bucaneer then mention a catapult on the front of the pestrel, but most of the other stories there is just some ineffective bow fire before they hit and go to hand to hand.
    2. most ancient ships did not sink, even when they had been pierced by rams. They were built in such a way as to keep afloat even when holed like that. usually they needed to be capsized(something they did with grapple hooks, thrown to the top of the mast and pulled) to sink. Granted the hole from ramming would lead to the ship being unstable and capsizing quicker.. it still didnt sink

essentially all the ship to ship moving and chasing is done off screen before the game started and narrativily has already happened(that is sort of how burning sand works) so you wouldnt need rules to do ship combat. that is also WAY more bulk than burning sands needs, its a simple streamlined game.

adding in ship movement and combat would require new shooting rules as well, and something for larger shots like bolt throwers and other heavy stuff. Again not sure that is in keeping with the rules.

indeed. but that can all be the same rules used in the land based game. especially if its arrows or things that cant damage the boat anyway(and in this instance as the boat is terrain more than it is something that can be sunk, you cant sink the boats)

But you wouldnt need anything special rules wise for that, no boat rules, by making the boat terrain you are taking all the rules for moving it, damaging it ect from the game to really simplify it. again this would work but feels like something is missing. i have to try it out i guess
