@Geof Downton: do you have a source (magazine, book, link?)

    @Mike: YES!

Thx DSG for the explanation. I´m always surprised how many terms you encounter…

@Mike: I agree with the others on those tiles. Besides this if you make different ones they may be liked by customers not reguarly interested in your stuff. Those tile would easily work well for medieval cobblestones in 28mm too.

Ahm, short question in between: What does the terms holler-dweller and sub mean. This is one of the few times the internet let´s me down with slang terms. (I THINK it means something like homeless ( derogatory) but I´m not sure.) Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I had not realised that there was any source, though Vegetius was writing in the early 5th Century.

That´s quite an argument FOR slingers in this periond. Quite a percentage of the troops at this time came from regions using the sling frequently (only think of the Germanic people) and it´s quite possible that they adopted some of their tactics.

Same as Ruarigh – especially on the shows he mentioned. I may add that I always look for inspirations in anything I watch including documentations. Many times I even go farther and my gaming (on the computer and the table) dictates what I watch and read.
I very much like than to take things from different settings and recombine them into something new.
To take an example, watching the classic spaghetti westerns always brings up new scenarios for sci-fi or a heroic fantasy game.

Yes, it´s rather Renaissance. But given the tech level displayed in the books, one of the essays of de Camp and the fact we are still talking about fantasy they would work. The Wikipedia entry has an interesting variation that was used in Iran in the 9th century btw.
Hm, one of the Conan comics I had (Sadly, turned to dust in the last thirty years) showed a lot of crucifications, like the Romans did. The whole scene resembled a lot the movie Spartacus (the one starring Kirk Douglas) including, as far as I remember, skeletons hanging there. But don´t ask me how this would work.

Damn you Thorsten Frank! Now I’m getting annoyed that there aren’t any rules like that in the rules!

    You are very welcome!

Well, I while I understand why Mike Hutchinson left pedestrian rules out of the official rules I don´t understand why he don´t made some, at leaast, suggestions on the homepage. As you wrote that was an opportunity not used.
On the other hand I think, as stated above, I understand his decision. Again as you said, he tried it to make it different from Car Wars in as many ways as possible and keep it as playable as possible. Anything on foot would have led to complicated rules and that turns certain players simply off. And Car Wars was a complicated game in some ways. You can play several Gaslands games in the same space of time as one Car Wars game.
While I like the rich detail I get from a Car Wars game it´s always a question of time – a Gaslands game is set up faster and played.
It all comes down to personal preference.
Hm, something in between those too would be nice.

The lore of the game certainly did stop my enthusiasm for the game. One of the few games I completely ignore the “official” lore – and I´m a lore fanatic buying rules only because of this. But a sure pro for this is surely one could easier integrate some gadgets from Cyberpunk/road stuff like Walter Jon William´s Hardwired.

The game itself is really fun especially for people which aren´t wargamers. And it has some interesting mechanics.

But personally there were a besides the lore a few other things that aren´t my liking. The games primary concentration on a race was one. This was intended (see above – it makes it easier for non-wargamers to “understand” the game). But that was more or less changed with some rules and scenarios on the homepage. What weighed more for me is the ignorance of people without vehicles on the board be they drivers from crashed vehicles, spectators, passants etc etc. Always hoped to get rules for that but that don´t seems in the mind of the developer.

So, I would need them to accommodate adventures and battles, incorporating anything from 3-4 figs and up to maybe 150 figs per side (very rarely), and featuring specialized “characters/leaders/heros” with individual attributes, “line” troops with more generic stats, and light role play. Is there anything out there that does that?

Well, for the few-against-many part Burning Sands comes immediately to my mind. I´ve done one game with 4 “heroes” against 20 adversaries (the heroes lost but there was a chance for them to turn the game more than once).

Mike, actually that happened with your Burning Sands rules- I took a look at the rules and they worked for my purposes …. and then the rest followed.
My 28mm project worked different. I´ve had an idea and searched for minis. TBH, I still haven´t found the perfect rule set for them but Outlands and the Five Parsecs series come both close.
Generally, as a 6mm sci-fi player I´ve got already quite a range of minis. I can take a look at the rules and use whatever I have (that happened with Horizon Wars, The Crucible etc) but I reguarly go back to DSII because that are the rules I´m most familiar with. But I still look for new rules in this size.

    A lighter option is sawdust.

Never thought of that. I´ve got TONS of this stuff.

. Now, I also tend to use natural sand and dirt a lot. For instance, all of my Vietnam minis are based with red dirt that I scrapped up while travelling through southern Oklahoma. It looks exactly like red laterite, and there are even areas that are so red that it looks like what we think “martian red” should be. My property has 6 different colors of dirt, and I used them all extensively. The little twigs and roots that is sometimes found within also adds to great effect! Why buy expensive stuff when you can have free, organic, free range terrain?

That´s a bit problematic and you can laugh about me now but my region got some stuff from Chernobyl back then and I´ve got a spot in the garden a Geiger counter get´s really working.  Hm.  On the other hand you don´t know what´s already in the house. Got to think about that.

Me too, Thorsten. Fortunately I picked up a large pile of GW “Dark Future” minis in a sale they had at the time they pulled the game. Also RH Models do some nice 20mm sci-fi stuff along with their other ranges. Order by phone only, no cart on their website(s). Elheim have some Gaslands type figures which do nicely for sci-fi too.

Huh? Elheim even has Colonial Marines in movie style. Never heard of both companies. Sadly, RH hasn´t any useful pictures to look at and I think this guy with a proper shop would make more than pocket money (but doesn´t seem interested).
Anyway, both links are extremely interesting. I will have a close look

TBH, I don´t draw a line anymore too. I tried to make a difference as I began with the hobby but early on, especially with BT, the lines already blurred.
Nowadays I even consider RPGs and video games as part of the hobby – just expanding the range.

Objectively observed currenly: 28mm GW followed by 20mm WWII.

Personally: started with 1/300/6mm (Battletech) and 1/72 (20mm – various plastic types mostly ancients for DBA and a handful WWII). Back then started to collect some Spacelords 28mm but not many and have given them away and most of the ancients because of lack of players. Kept a few of WWII. Just in case.
Played 6mm sci-fi for the following decades. For me the best for battlegroup type of games (I don´t really can´t get rid of DSII….) and space combat (FT and my favourite Silent Death)
First left my comfort zone last year starting a 28mm sci-fi project. I want to keep it small and with not many figures (Space Trader type of game). Decision for 28mm was because the range of minis for my purposes was greater than in 15mm. My choice was on an emotional basis. I want to keep that small because of the prices. Currrently on hiatus due to:
Started 15mm sword&sorcery this summer and left completely my comfort zone. Fascinating scale and available ranges for my purposes – in fact currently I´ve got only the wish for two certain miniatures (yes, two figures)  I haven´t found yet to be completely happy.
And, gladly, there´s even more coming touching spots in me I didn´t know I have. There´s still much

Will have to read the AAR on here again. I totoally forgot about NWG as well, I have 5 Parsecs Salvage Crew and reread it, it’s a strong contender for the soloability. Wasn’t interested in Renegade scout when it came out (same with War Story), will have to look into that. I like the activation of the new vesion of these games, makes a turn a little less predictable. Which (Salvage Crew/Gang Warfare vs Renegade Scout) would you say is closer to Necromunda in terms of character progression and gang management?

Difficult to answer for me because my eperience with Necromunda is limited – but from my feeling Gang Warfare comes closer and is IMHO better moddable. But Renegade Scout comes very close too.
A very nice one from the rules side is Outlands. It´s some kind of Borderlands on the board. The con´s on this one it´s primarily designed competitive and have (or at least I haven´t seen them) any “gang” mechanics for campaigns. But, after the 5P games Outlands are my favourite sci-fi rules currently.

Core Space – this was a surprise. Just watched a play through a turn on youtube and it shot up to the top of the list because of the items and character card. I like the weapon stats and items character can carry but I’ll have to check the post game portion.

I´m watching and want this one for a while now. From the YT perspective they look absolute fantastic. And the perspective to combine the various Battlesystem components is freaking me out. But the price…. On the other hand if I look how much money I´ve alread spend over the years.

There’s the Osprey ruleset Rogue Stars (no relation to Rogue Planet that I’m aware of). Just be aware it’s more granular and crunchy than even most other skirmish rulesets. Does anyone know if any of the Nordic Weasel rulesets would fit the bill?

Rogue Stars is one of the games that try to “emulate” the original Rogue Trader. The rules, while not bad, aren´t after my liking in a few ways.

Regarding NWG, 5P: Gang Warfare is specialized on this topic with such mechanics. If you already know Salvage Crew and you like the rules and want something in a more shady envrionment this could fit.

The “anvil on the mountain” will likely fit best. Maybe as a variation, instead of a mountain a volcano (and a plume in form of an anvil) or a volcano, stylized as an anvil and a plume in hammer form. Or a plume or a cloud looking like an anvil.

However, I´ve thought about it since the morning and have come to some other ideas:

    – the classic barbarian standing against an charge as seen in many of the comics. This may be (is!) too complex as a logo.

    – Frazetta´s Death Dealer-style as logo. Same as above, too complex and likely a copyright problem.

    – Shield and weapons with an anvil in the foreground or the weapons on the anvil.

    – Chibi- or 8bit-style barbarian (this would have been the advantage that people don´t mistake you with the weapons smith in Canada)

Great review!!!! I really fell in love with Burning Sands already after the first read through.

Because I’m a hide-bound, Luddite old fool who likes something clenched in his sinewy hands, by Crom! But maybe I’ll need to change. Could it be possible?

I really prefer still prefer paper. One can call me old-fashioned. But a good eBook reader or tablet can be an alternative. And besides printing them out yourselve, which get´s quite expensive if you aren´t lucky enough to have an laser printer,  it´s quite handy if you´ve got a printing shop nearby. And I´m lucky to have one (quite a larger one on the border to a printing house). There are several pros for this: for a “cheaper” (in terms of money) I can get a colour print for 50 pages in A4 for 11 Euro and for 6 Eurons in Black and White. Completely professionally bound. It get´s even cheaper if I have several different PDF´s to print. Hardcover is a bit more expensive. So, for a PDF like Burning Sands I could get a soft cover print for a similar price as if I would buy it as a book.
